Hi
I was wondering if there was any way of getting into some web sites that are blocked in Saudi. This has to do with teaching and not porno. My colleagues have told me that they have tried to select the option of getting it unblocked but never get any response.
Thanks in advance for any information. |

Oh, you have touched one of the sensitive issue in SA, which is using the internet. As we all know, all the information passing in the internet is filtered at KIng AbdelkAziz City for Science and technology (KCST). But, the problem is that, technically, they cannot block all the information and internet addressess, because the information is updated and created daily, and some of them can get through FireWalls of KCST. So what they do is to block mainly the addressess dealing with pornography and other politically directed against SA. But they miss a lot of them, until they are reporetd by Internet users. Sometimes they block addressess which have nothing to do with pornography or politics, only becasue it happens to be that the internet address if is similar to one of the assumed to be not got, so there is mixing of names.
I know a lot of users, especially, the Saudis can escape the filtering by using special techniques with special softwares which can pass through the FIREWALL created by KCST (ask the computer experts for this). The other method is the refresh you web page and go back using the BAK menu of your internet explorer (sometimes it works). The last method is, and if you are rich, use Satellite Internet Modem, where you will connect to the internet directly from a Satellite, and you will be free in your own virtual world, but it will cost you a lot of money !!!!!!!
By the way, some of the colleges, use special spy program which can screen and observe you when you surf the Internet, this software can detetect your computer IP address, and from it they can know which computer was in which office.
SO BE CAREFULL WITH WHAT YOU SURF IN THE INTERNET, YOUR BOSS IS WATCHING OVER YOUR SHOULDER. |

Thanks for the info. Again, my interests are not of a porno nature, I have always found that stuff way too frustrating and would opt for the real thing or a good Arnold Shwarzt action movie.
Thanks again. |

If there was no real reason for it being blocked in the first place just use the unblockkng form. It is a nuisance as they email you and you have to fill it all in again, but they normally unblock within 24 hours.
One thing to bear in mind is that 'generic' sites they don't know the content of , such as Utube, or tinyurl are blocked, and in that case they will do nothing. |

I used to be a fun of this actor Arnold, but after his interference in the ME problem and taking side with Israel, I think he spoiled himself, and he desapointed me ! |

Try Onspeed. I get into lots of cool educational sites that the censors would rather I didnt. |

I've very rarely experienced problems with the notorious Saudi internet censorship. But then, since I don't surf porn sites and Arabic language political or religous discussion pages (their main areas of interest) I guess I wouldn't.
Seriously, unless you want to access any of the above categories of sites, the censorship is unlikely to be too big a factor. As others have said, the censors can be a bit, um, idiosyncratic in what they ban, but generally their main concerns are with politics and porn. IMHO, slow and unreliable connections are a far bigger issue. |

Yes I agree with Cleo, if its not pornographic or political its not blocked. I find very little sites that I want to reach and cant reach from KSA. |

Just curious to know, what are the blocked teaching sites? |

I viewed a Japanese site the other day dealing with methods of teacher-pupil discipline. It was blocked until Onspeed kicked in. It seems the censors do cast a very wide net. |

Another alternative is to get orbitsat (internet satellite) 24hour service, no blocked sites; set up is fast and relatively painless. Speed is not as fast as I expected, but is still reliable. It's much better than phone line connection!
I figure the expenditure is worth it since there is very little entertainment to spend one's money in KSA. approx. 120.00 a month; initial set up is approx.about 2300 Riyals, but you get half that back when you quit the service and return the equipment. Best check with the company as I forget the exact details.
If interested you can access orbit sat through www.orbit.net fill out the online application through arabsat link and they call you within one day and can have the satellite dish set up and running the same day or at very least two days. |

Van Norden,
With Onspeed, how does simply speeding up the connection get past the censor? Looking at their website, it seems it just compresses and makes the connection load faster. Wouldn't the censor still BLOCK the sites? |
