I will be travelling to Vietnam in the next couple of weeks and because I am a bit of a golden oldie the bright lights of HCMC are not a top priority. I have centred on Hanoi and came across a site featuring North hotels as offering fairly cheap initial accommodation in two places in the city. Can anyone comment on this outfit or suggest any alternatives?
I am thinking in terms of a two year stay in Vietnam and I guess I will follow a well worn path of looking around for work as well as more permanent accommodation.
I have emailed a couple of sites with schools in Hanoi and I guess take it from there when I arrive. |

I work for Apollo Hanoi - they put me up in a hotel called Binh Minh for my first few weeks, which was about 10 minutes walk from the center and cost $18 a night (for me and my girlfriend in the same room.) It was acceptable but not wonderful. Other than that I don't know much about hotels here.
However, I can recommend a great website - http://www.newhanoian.com. It's a site run by expats which has articles about life in Hanoi and reviews various places. I'm pretty sure there's a hotels section too. If you have any other specific questions, ask away... |

Thanks for the info, I guess I am curious about Apollo. Is it appropriate to ask how you find them as a an employer? |

Yeah, no problem - initially I didn't like working for Apollo. I happened to arrive in a period where many teachers were finishing their contracts, so my classes kept changing on me. Also, the timetable is pretty rough - teaching 4 classes of kiddies/teens on Saturday and the same on Sunday wears you out. Now things have stabilized a bit, and I see the benefits of that timetable - for the rest of the week you can sleep in, relax, and come in in the afternoon to plan your adult lessons and a few for the weekend.
HR is pretty helpful, though you have to lean on them a little bit. The management is willing to help you if you're stuck with planning, have a problem class, etc. They're getting more and more organized with flashcard files, etc.
All in all, a good school to work for. |
