I would like to ask those who have worked in both Taiwan and Hong Kong:

Which place is the best for:

1. Salary
2.Standard of living
3. Ability to save
4.respect for Teachers
5.Respect for/attitudes towards foreigners in general
6.quality of management
7.ease of work schedules
8.dating locals
9.Food
10.weather

Thanks

Hong Kong for both money, foreigners not being gawked at by locals and different amenities that many expats enjoy (bars, pubs, restaurants, shopping, gyms, etc.).

Except. I've heard that the women are not that attractive in Hong Kong (which would most matter if you're a single dude).

Even with the high cost of living, people are apparantly able to still save a lot of money each month.

Hong Kong wins easily, but I think it's worth pointing out that HK is alarmingly more expensive, where as Taiwan is much more reasonable for daily costs.

I would also add that you can probably save more in Taiwan than HK (if you plan on working in a private language school). If you want the public sector, then go for the HK NET scheme. It is probably the highest paid position in Asia for Native English Teachers.

It does however all come down to personal choice. I'm sure that you will enjoy whatever you choose.

foreigners are gawked at in some locales...but certainly not in Central, Causeway Bay, etc. etc...

The local woman are actually not that tasty...I'd say that 85% of the local Chinese ladies on the Kowloon side are unattractive to the point of being candidates for an animated film. The hotties/fashionistas are on the HK Island side. There is a very noticeable difference.

Having said/written that, let me state another very subjective opinion: some of the loveliest ladies here are not the locals , but rather the SE Asian housekeepers and/or the South Asian ladies from India. absolutely gorgeous.

yes- saving money is as easy as any other Asian country - what is your lifestyle? vs. what is your salary?

I disagree.

daily costs are almost identical, transport sometimes cheaper....the big difference is housing. Budget on paying 3 times in HK for what you pay in Taiwan for housing, unless you rent/buy in a rural district in the New Territories.

check out http://www.geoexpat.com/ for real discussions re: HK.

otherwise.....enjoy. I am happy here in HK, despite having a dragonlady for an English Panel Chair. Mad Razz
