I've been working in Thailand and Korea the past few years and whenever I research working in VN, I always see one that one of the requirements is a criminal background check. Is this really necessary because I really don't want to go back to America just for that.

Yes I was also curious about that - I am from the UK and have been living in japan for the past year... before that I was in the UK for 4 months only, as before that i was living in Ecuador for 8 months.... I have a criminal check certificate for the time before that - is that still ok? does anyone know? I am leaving Japan in Feb and planning to be in Vietnam by June to work... but am worried about this police check thing being a logistical nightmare.

For the pair of you........ yes it is necessary in order to obtain a work permit, but you needn't go home for it. It is possible to do this from VN.

Google criminal background check for your particular part of the world and have a read. Nothing is free and not much is easy, do it yourself.

I think you just have to write to the police station where your driver's license or ID is registered and have them do a local check and then get it notarized. , which they can usually do on site.

Actually, it's a huge recurring headache of the migraine variety for which there seems to be no effective treatment.Crying or Very sad

This is a good place to begin:
