hi i just had a quick question...
see heres the thing.. i am currently in uruguay.. somewhat teaching english.. i had a contract for next year.. but its possible that it may or may not fall through.. or at least i wont be making the same hours as i would like tooo.. having said that i have another back up job closer to home.. which i still dont know the final hours.. but i do have work there..

im a little nervous about our money situation.. my husband works.. but doesnt make much.. its me who is the breadwinner.. or as i like to say brings home the bacon!

so i started seriously thinking of heading out to asia for a year.. now is that crazy? or can i really save up some hard cash.. ive read that you can make around 2 200 - 3 000 cnd/ month with accomodations.. etc.. but HOW MUCH OF THAT DO YOU ACTUALLY SAVE? after taxes... living expenses.. and i heard that in korea tutoring is illegal??? and you have to sign on the contract that you wont do it???

basically my question is is it worth it?

also i have a small child.. and it will be hard to leave him (obviously!!) for a year.. as well my husband...

so it is all really worth it.. or is just a magical invented land with gumdrop trees?

thanks!

Those figures are in the old CDN dollars before it went past the US dollar.

The standard starting package in Japan is 250,000yen (CDN$2250.41 according to XE) a month, but seems to be falling to closer to 230,000 yen (about CDN$2000). If you are paying your own rent (which is the normal situation in Japan) then after eating etc you won't be saving much. You have a child so you would be lucky to break even on the 230,000.

You would save more out in the countryside than the city.

Korea is a lot cheaper than Japan, with a starting salary that isn't much less- in fact seems to be pretty much equal to the $2000 one, but I've never lived there. You should register with the Korean forums and repost your question for Korea in particular.

So I take it you're unqualified

. i had a contract for next year.. but its possible that it may or may not fall through
So it's not actually a contract then

.. or at least i wont be making the same hours as i would like tooo.. having said that i have another back up job closer to home.. which i still dont know the final hours.. but i do have work there..
So you don't actually have a job there, then.

im a little nervous about our money situation.. my husband works.. but doesnt make much.. its me who is the breadwinner.. or as i like to say brings home the bacon!
Blimey, if he is making less money than a part time teacher in Uraguay, what the heck does he do?

so i started seriously thinking of heading out to asia for a year.. now is that crazy?
No

or can i really save up some hard cash.. ive read that you can make around 2 200 - 3 000 cnd/ month with accomodations.. etc.. but HOW MUCH OF THAT DO YOU ACTUALLY SAVE? after taxes... living expenses.. and i heard that in korea tutoring is illegal??? and you have to sign on the contract that you wont do it???
Have you actually done any research?

basically my question is is it worth it?

also i have a small child.. and it will be hard to leave him (obviously!!) for a year.. as well my husband...
I have a wife and a toddler and it would take riches beyond the dreams of Avarice to make me go away for a year, and then probably not.

Is there more to this? Wink

so it is all really worth it.. or is just a magical invented land with gumdrop trees?

thanks!

To answer your question, yes it CAN be worth it, but only if you go with a good company, at management level and have knowledge and common sense.
I did 3 years in Asia, at management level, with my wife (Teacher) and saved about 25,000 USD a year.

I would suggest to go to Taiwan. Pay is better and expenses are lower.
