I have recently resorted to paying a placement agency for a teaching job, but was warned that the prospects of getting a March-start position would be slim to none since I applied so late. In hearing this, I started applying to a ton of privately listed schools and am hearing about a pretty tedious application process- - including grammer testing, visits with a psychologist- - taking up to two weeks. Is this standard? It is with the Norteamericano institute, which I've heard nothing but good things about, but it seems pretty involved.
Also, to anyone who is currently in Chile now, what do you think the prospects are of finding work for March. I am really concerned about not having something pretty definitely lined up before leaving because I dont want to blow through my savings.

Check out some other schools. Odd to make foreigners go through psy. testing.

Go to: http://www.amarillas.cl/searchAdvertises.do?method=searchAdvertises&searchType=1300&keywordComplet=institutos&termoId=000717583&termoDesc=Escuelas+de+Idiomas&activitySourceComponent=ACTIVITIES_LIST&activitySourcePage=INTERMEDIATE_PAGE&status=P&guideId=1&localeMarketId=0

This is from amarillas.cl, search for escuelas de idiomas. There are tons of schools, some of which are serious and recomendable.

The psychological testing is not uncommon for Chileans seeking jobs, though I've yet to hear of a language institute requiring it for its teachers. It sounds a bit beyond the pale -- I doubt most foreign teachers would submit to it. In any case, there are any number of places that won't ask for it, or a teaching certificate, or any experience -- or much of anything except your shining gringo face, really.
