| Let's say I was hired for a position, got the work VISA, got my wife a Dependant VISA, but didn't show up to the job, and got a better job in a different city. What could happen to my VISA? Can the first company revoke it? Not saying I'm doing this, just curious. |

Been asked a thousand times.
Nothing will probably happen to your visa. At least have the courtesy to notify the employer and apologize, though. Leaving them in the lurch is one thing; not even showing up when they might send someone to the airport, get an apartment ready, and have a schedule of classes laid out with students signed up is another. |

| It's interesting how advertising affects us subtly, isn't it. VISA all in capitals is the logo of the credit card. There's no reason to write the kind of visa you get in your passport all in capitals, but so many people do. |

And yes, I agree. Like I said, wasn't planning on doing it, just curious as my wife asked me about it the other day. Thanks |

| But how would you get your visa without ever going to the job? Doesnt your job have to take you to the immigration office to get the stamp in your passport? |

| No, you should be getting the visa before you arrive in country from the consulate or embassy (actually I think the consulates take your passport and send it to the embassy), otherwise you are in Japan on a tourist visa, working illegally, and scrambling to get the proper visa. |

| Did you get your job after arriving in Japan, Quibby? If you have a job lined up you actually have the visa already in your passport when you arrive in Japan. |

For visa-related issues, the company you work for, or want to work for, is not who you should trust, ultimately; It's the government of the country you are living in (or are about to live in). There's information everywhere. An interesting invention (possibly invented by Al Gore) is the internet. There's also an antiquated device called the telephone that still works wonders.
Honestly, Quibby, are you just pulling our chains with your posts sometimes? |

Quibby might be confusing the visa with Alien Registration, but...

... I have wondered this exact thing myself. The naivete, at times, astounds to the degree that I sometimes think we're being had...

I was completey naive when I got here...completely...we came in a dreamy blinded haze and we believed everything that was told to us...I think that I was used to trusting people, especially employeers (I have never had a bad one). I did research, but in the end I just believed what my company told me... We are seeing more and more everyday on how much we were screwed...and I think there are still things I dont know about..well as you can see from the previous post...
oh, I also tend to speak before I think...it has been a lifelong problem...BUT I dont tend to lie...just talk to much...sorry.
ok, didnt mean to hijack again...carry on... |

Thats very true and I have heard this from many people regarding their teaching jobs, over here and in other countries !
I think its often the approach that many newbies who come to Japan take. But, if you trust people and have not had a bad experience with an employer - ie. a bad deal/contract etc, - why would you expect something different ?
Perhaps this is a naive approach, - or is it just being optomistic ?
People have good experiences; people get mistreated, thats the way it is unfortunately ...
'Caveat emptor' - or really, 'teacher beware' ... |
