had to start a new thread. One must have a life outside work.
Anyone who relocates to a new country has to be concerned about the social life. I don't know what the moderators do in their working hours when not curbing free speech in the forums.
Iraq is also good for money if you don't care about your health or social life. That's why this is not the Middle East Forum.
As I'm not interested in dating Grandma, the ideas posted in earlier threads are not without value. I am tired of working, working, working all the time.
No, the local sluts really don't interest me. I don't want to spend dinner with a woman who is worried about her five children from eight different fathers. (It is not abut mathematics, but probabilities that you should be thinking right now!)
Drinking with the 'boys' (who are they?) is hardly descriptive. Is this siege mentality exclusively? Or are there real people out there? |

Yup, I'm still interested in this, too -- thanks for starting a new thread. (Careful not to criticize our benevolent overlords, otherwise this one might get locked too).
To recap: I'm probably going to come to VN to teach English, but would be doing it for the lifestyle. There's a lot of conflicting opinions out there about what life outside of work would be like for a youngish, single westerner who isn't into whoring and heavy drinking.
Help? |

What about travelling? there's alot of places to travel so that HCM is not the only option. But there isn't much as far as late night places to go other than cafe lounges, or maybe karaoke places. There's a ton of them in HCM. The travelling and tours were alot of fun, so if you get bored I would probably recommend something like that. I think Cantho was pretty interesting at night, it's also another large city like atmosphere like HCM. |

I've always found there is quite a lot to do in HCMC, although a fair bit of it does revolve around drinking. The tourist area stays open late but gets a bit scummy after a while. There are good bars elsewhere but they close a bit earlier and are a bit more expensive.
Ermm.. am trying to think of things to do if you are not into drinking. I work out a fair bit and the gyms are pretty decent, they put on the usual classes and that. There are sports clubs run by ex-pats at the weekends, it's pretty easy to get a game of football and there is even a cricket club. There's bowling and karaoke that stay open late. Word is that there is a ten screen cinema opening. Dancing seems pretty big, salsa and ballroom and that sort of the thing. There isn't much of a club scene though, which is a bit crap. There are a couple of live music places but they aren't all that great.
It's easy to meet the locals and get into what they do, which is generally walking around parks, eating ice cream and drinking coffee. Pretty tame but can be fun.
Basically, I'm not into the seedier side of life here and have never had a problem keeping myself entertained. Best thing is probably to check out the Asia Life website.

There is plenty to do in Saigon. www.saigonh3.com - the Hash House Harriers is a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Once you get settled you'll find a lot of people to hang out with. It takes a while to find your way around, but once you get out of De Tham and the Ghetto you will see things open up quickly.
De Tham is still the center point for foreigners, but that is changing. It is where you most likely to be dropped off if you come by land rout and it's mostly bars and restaurants. Still you can get a Herald or English language magazine most easily there. |
