Hello,
I will have a BS in Biochemistry in May 08. My goal is to have somthing on my resume besides ESL for when ESL teaching is over and I want to get a biochemist job. Anything that relates to biology, chemisty, animals, plants, blood, labs, hospitals, drugs, fungus, biotechnology. I will even consider volunteering. Maybe you can suggest where to look to attempt to find this type of work...my mandarin is level 1. I would try to do this part time but take it full time if it pays more than ESL.
Also...
I want to clarify these questions...
Is Taiwan one of the better places for me to work if I want to save the most money?
Can my Spanish and Chemistry tutoring skills be a money making asset?
If I want to start work in August 08 when is the best time to apply?
Is living 1 hour away from the Taipei too far if I like the city and want to get to know it well?
Is it more difficult to get a 9-5 style first shift job than others?

Whats the name of the recruiter? Or did you see something advertised by HESS? One hour away sounds like you will be in a small town as the only foreigner and nothing to do but head into Taipei each weekend. But it might be nice. Just dont comit to anything until you get there. And dont sign a contract with a recruiter. Or consultant company. Or agent. |

Neutron9,
Unfortunately, you will probably not be eligible for any work except teaching. The rules for teaching are different than for any other kind of job. To be able to qualify for other work you need to prove you have two years of work experience.
You may want to try the International schools to see if they need a biology/chemistry teacher. They want a teaching degree but sometimes find it difficult to find science teachers and are willing to bend.
If you live an hour away from Taipei you will probably get into town by bus or train and will use public transportation to get around. It's pretty doable as long as you don't mind being without a scooter and like to walk a lot.
It's illegal to volunteer here, but ...
Good luck,
