I have just been turned down by ECC for a job in Japan. I don't understand why though... I'm an experienced teacher, with a 1-year completed contract with NOVA under my belt, and I've been teaching here in Canada since I got back 7 months ago (I missed the whole bankruptcy farce). My references are solid. The interview could not have gone better, and the ECC rep was talking like I was already hired. Head office must have denied me.
My last option is to get a working holiday visa, but none of the big eikaiwas have given me a job. There's no reason to expect a job from them when I get to Japan, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to secure a visa in the 1 year the working holiday pass gives me.
Is there something I don't know? Is the market that saturated? Is outsourcing changing the job pool that much? If anyone has any special knowledge here, please let me know. |

Yes, the market is that saturated. 5000 NOVA teachers out of work, and only a fraction of them rehired by G-COM still puts a lot on the streets physically here and able to start work immediately.
Yes, dispatch agencies are everywhere getting their vulturous claws into places some of us feel they don't belong.
I would imagine that you could find work on a working holiday visa, certainly within the 12 months that it lasts, but I would strongly suggest coming at a good time, perhaps March, and having enough money to sustain yourself for 3 months. Stay in a guest house, write to employers in advance of coming to say when you will be here available for an interview, and be sure someone looks over your resume just in case. |
