The major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and Diners club) were sued in a class action suit alleging they overcharged for overseas transactions for the past ten years. They have agreed to a 300 million plus settlement. They are proposing to refund up to 1-3% of overseas transactions pending final court approval.

I presume you are referring to cards issued by banks in the U.S., correct?

That'll narrow the field.

is this for real?

in order to get a claim form the site is asking for my social security number and the numbers of my credit cards! I am very weary of giving that information to some website....seems suspect to me.

While the pie is over 300 million bucks if everybody piles on they will all get about two cents each. I only posted this after the better angels of my nature prodded me unmercifully. The fewer (yes it's in an American court so I presume (or hope) it's only Americans who can claim the refund) the better.

So in answer to the last post... Yeah, that's right it's probably some scam. It's very perspicacious of you to have spotted that and warned everybody. Good on yer, chum!

Probably not entirely accurate. I'm a US citizen, but my credit cards are all issued by banks from other countries (haven't lived in the States for a looong time).

I'm pretty sure the refunds are going to be limited to cards issued by US banks, not necessarily to US citizens!!

Always assuming it's not a scam - which seems likely.

I received something in the mail on this last week. I don't have it in front of me now as I am at work but there were 3 options. The one that I will opt for is to get $25.00 flat rate with no documentation required. I don't know that my damages were substantial enough to justify the research needed to find documentation to support actual damages. The mailing I received had all of my personal information on it. You have until well into 2008 to decide on which option to pursue.

My case is different.

I would go back to the states in the summer and save up a mess of dough. I used my credit cards extensively to transfer cash during that period and so I can claim (Thanks to Quicken) ... well, more than $25.
