Hi,

I have been offered a position in Madrid and the salary is 1100 euro to start. I don`t know alot about Madrid or Spain (it has been a recent interest I have developed!) so I was wondering if the experts could help!, is this an acceptale salary for Madrid? It doesn`t include accommodation either. Would I be struggling on it? How much is average shared rent?

Thanks!

Dawn

It's certainly not going to allow you anything more than a very modest lifestyle. Forget about saving anything and either start applying for summer camp jobs for summer or book the flight back home.

Rents in Madrid now seem to start from 300 for a room in a shared flat. loquo.com should give you an idea.

That's terrible, but a fairly normal starting salary at least in Barcelona. You want to supplement your income by giving private classes, which you will find can be much better paid, if a less reliable source of income.

Without private classes, you would struggle to make ends meet.

It's terrible. Here in Madrid people earn a minimum of 16 per hour on contract, and 20 per hour autonomo. With experience/papers they get more. For private classes they charge between 20 and 30 euros per hour.

Don't let yourself be ripped off: Madrid has become much more expensive in the last few years, and though you could probably technically live on that money if you don't go out/drink/go on holiday you'd still be struggling.

This is an insulting salary. To give you some idea- here in provincial Spain unskilled factory workers get about 900 net- paid 14 times a year.
You'll get your 1100 from October to June. In the summer, you'll earn what you can. If you're young, willing to share accommodation and live like a student, you might survive with the help of private classes.
