Those who have been reading the posts here for a while may remember John Slattery of blessed memory and the IPA in Riyadh. He is alive and well and enjoying life in God's Own Country ! I got a Christmas message from him today !

There is a literary device known as "Irony". Check it out.

Glad to hear that he is well. Irony was one of the many things he was good at... and if he were still visiting the cafe, he would immediately have caught that one coming from Scot47. Laughing

No one was better at defusing disagreements on this site than he was... I miss his common sense and his great sense of humor.

John was one of the (very) few true gentlemen to frequent this site. Hs contributions are sorely missed.

Duh, hello? No kidding...no irony bypass- it was a question. When people use the term to which country are they usually referring? US? Britain?

You must remember that Cleopatra and Scot47 are the brainiest people on the planet. The rest of us are intellectual garbage. Oops! Scot47 would insist on rubbish rather than garbage.

I had the inesteemable honor of visiting Sir Slattery's adopted home state of N.M. recently. It's quite a place.

I'm glad to hear that he is well. I am one of those people who panic when the phone rings in the middle of the night, so when I saw your subject line I was afriad to read it....now I can breath again.

I can't speak for Britain, but that is commonly used in the US by some. My late staunchly Republican father (with whom I avoided political discussions) used the term regularly.

How true! There aren't many of us. Apart from me, I think I could count the real gents on the fingers of both hands. 007, Trapezius, Spiral, Biffin and 2 or 3 others. Sorry, I forgot Prodigy.
Getting back to Mr. Slattery, he sounds a splendid man and certainly not a pompous bore who takes himself too seriously.
Merry Xmas

And to think that there is a tourism board (department) run by the government of a country which has a registered trade-slogan for "God's Own Country".

To keep to the thread, it's heartening to read that being a gentleman (John Slattery, here's wishing you good cheer!) still pays, in today's world. I thought that the facelessness of the Internet had put paid to it.

Ya Sheikh,

If you want to see how a gentlemen handles himself, do a search and read his posts from the past. One wonders why you feel the need to try to hijack this particular thread with sniping.

I finally met him (and his wife) in person a couple years back when I was passing through New Mexico. Rather than just resting on his laurels, he had taken up elementary school teaching - 5th grade I think it was - in a Catholic School. And he was very much enjoying it. They very kindly let me 'camp' in their driveway in my RV. (caravan for non-Americans)

I'd agree with Cleo on this one, he is one of few true gentlemen I have encountered in my life. But I would expect that he too could sometimes be a pompous bore - even gentlemen are not perfect. Cool

Good idea! In fact, the missus and I have just finished a fine bottle of Ysios. This is an excellent wine aged in oak from Northern Spain. I'm no expert but am willing to offer advice to those of you who wish to learn more about the excellent wines of Spain.
