Hello guys,
I'm new to the forum but don't feel this is question is green enough to post in the 'newbie' section, maybe I'm wrong..
I've taught EFL for a few years in Cambodia, China and Ethiopia and I'm now studying Education and English between the UK and Amsterdam. I'd love to carry on afterwards to teach in other exciting countries; Columbia, Venezuela, DRC etc. but I've got a baby on the way and I'm reorganizing all my priorities.
My question is; when I have QTS and I'm able to teach where I like, where should I? I need to look after my child and my wife (blonde, Dutch).
I've thought UAE but does 500 a week in Dubai give us all a good lifestyle? I want what a lot of people want; financial/physical security, financial freedom, sunshine and an ethical domestic political climate.
Any ideas? Thanks. |

Aside from not knowing what a QTS is, and not being able to place your wife's nationality and hair colour within the context of your post, perhaps the Middle East forums might attract more attention.
Congrats on the soon to arrive baby. |

Dear Ernie Cuba,
esltudies makes a good point. You might want to repost in the "General Middle East" forum.
Regarding this part of your posting:
The Arab Peninsula: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait specifically.
"I want what a lot of people want; financial/physical security, financial freedom, sunshine and an ethical domestic political climate."
1. financial security: the Arab Peninsula is probably the best EFL spot in the world for this.
2. physical security: one never knows where the Middle East is concerned, but I'd say it's at least good to very good.
3. financial freedom: if you have the qualifications, the experience and the right temperament, the Middle East is the best place to achieve this.
4. sunshine: mostly year-round
5. an ethical domestic political climate: Ah, now we might have a problem, depending a lot on your definition of "ethical." There aren't many (if any) countries in the world that, I'd say, have an ethical domestic political climate, and if you went searching for one, the Middle East wouldn't be where you'd start to look.
My experience? Nineteen years in Saudi Arabia, 1/2 a year in Iran (the Islamic Revolution in '79 interrupted my stay there.) |

Thanks for you response, JS, that's pretty much confirming my assumptions. Nineteen years in Saudi? Pretty interesting. |
