|
|
I am in Thailand (2 years), teaching uni level. I taught 6 yrs in Spain (speak Spanish) at unis and 'academies'. I have CELTA and non-TEFL master's etc. I am experienced and fine with general, ESP Medical, Business Eng etc.
I need newbie advice. I have never been to SAmerica but like the idea. I have heard that Chile is good (climate, culture, safety). I am worried about Colombia and drugs/being robbed, same Peru. Then again, some people rate Argentina highly.
I am 50s, single, financially ok. I don't want to sleep in the jungle, or pay a charity to find me a job. I work hard and want fair play and a nice apartment. I am not willing to be ripped-off by crooked language schools with no facilities.
Can anyone tell me where I should go? Or give me ideas of where to avoid? etc.
Thanks

Mexico and Argentina seem good, lots of English teachers there, so the locals might be used to foreigners more. Ecuador as well.
About Peru, yes there is crime and drugs, but it's easily avoided.
if
Could you be more specfic about what you're looking for? Do you want to bond with the locals? Or live where ther e are lots of foriengers?
Just a heads up, you'll probably be making 500 to 1000 USd a month. If you want to avoid tourists, try Uruguay. |

hi Paul, most of S.America and W.Europe you have to "be in person" to get the jobs.
my advice, come on a tourist visa, start at a language school, and scout out the rest of the area while you're on the 90 day tourist visa.
i can only comment about Ecuador and Paraguay where i have lived. In Ecuador, you might try Key Languages in the capital, Quito.
you do have an advantage with a masters.....maybe, go to www.tefl.com, or www.tesol.org and check those sites that are looking for people with masters.
also in Quito, Ecuador try www.cec-epn.edu.ec, pay well with a Masters, or www.eilecuador.org very well established schools / unis in the capital area... |

Good advice so far!
I don't want a tourist trap, but neither do I want a village of 20 people.
I'm a gay man...it may help to know that...although it's not the main focus of my life (and I'm 53) so I don't want to be in gay bars every day.
I hold stereotypes: in Colombia you get robbed. Mexico is full of Americans, etc
I don't need to work from day 1 to eat.
Genuine and friendly people--the most important thing--and not too tropical (sun and cool days too).
