Just saw this on the eslemployment site. Looks very suspicious to me... flat paid for, health insurance, salary too high, air fare paid for, very un-Spanish teaching hours?

http://www.eslemployment.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/2676.html#

WE ARE LOOKING FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS TO START WORK AT THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY 2008.

Laluna International School is located in Malaga Spain. We are looking for motivated, confident, enthusiastic, and lively English teachers to teach different ages and levels. Celta/Tefl/Tesol Certificate is an advantage but not compulsory .

We offer full time legal contract to the end of January 2008 with a guaranteed minimum weekly workload. Teachers are paid 1200 euro per Month . Health insurance is 50/50. The amount is enough to live comfortably in Spain, to pay the accomodation bills, to travel as you wish, to enjoy the Spanish way of life.

Teachers will receive free air ticket and thirty days paid holidays.

We provide the teacher with a private accomodation which is near the school; the school pays the rent but the teacher has to pay the bills with his/her salary (they are higher in winter and lower in summer because of heating, on average 150 every 2 months).

The usual workload will be about 25 hours a week and the classes commence in the morning, from 8:30 to 1:30 PM (Monday to Friday)

All teachers have free access to the teachers resource library, computers and free in-house teacher training package (both on-arrival and ongoing).
In our school there is a nice atmosphere and a friendly working environment in a dynamic team. This position could be suitable for a person who wants to try a new exciting experience and who would like to have the opportunity to live the Spanish life and culture.

So, if you think you are a responsible, patient, enthusiastic, and creative person who feels like living this new experience in our great country, e-mail your resume to:[email protected]

Contact Person: Marcel Debarto

Please send ONLY your CV if you are interested,if we consider you eligible after perusing your resume,we may ask you to send other credentials.

Hi, I saw your post here about the Laluna International School, and it caught my attention because they sent me that exact email. I want to know if this is a scam or for real? I'll be happy to see your reply. Thanks.

Send your cv and then see if they ask you for money to do some bogus thing like 'process your work visa.'

It does read very much like a scam. These are not normal terms/conditions for newbie teachers in Spain. And it's obviously aimed at newbies, considering the condition of 'tefl cert an advantage but not compulsory.' In this market, most newbs have a cert, at least + working rights for within the EU.

If they're marketing outside the EU, it's almost 100% a scam, since private language schools 99% can't get non-EU member citizens work permits, by Spanish law.

Actual international schools don't hire people with such basic quals. YOu generally need a recognized teaching credential from your home country, in a core subject, and likely some related post-grad creds as well.

But actual international schools CAN get work permits for non-Eu member citizens.

A test application produced the following e-mail:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Teachers,
I,Dr. Philip Edina,a former teacher, now a succesful business man and a philantrophist in BENIN REPUBLIC .It worries me so much that teachers are still not recognised in our society today,they are still paid poor salaries,in most countries they are being humiliated and neglected.Teachers have contributed immencely to the success of so many individuals worldwide,i say bravo to them.
As this Christmas is fast approching,i am giving out 200,000 dollars to twenty teachers for the celebration,10,000 dollars each.
The first twently people to respond to this message will receive the money.Please if you are not a teacher,DO NOT REPLY to this email.
Kindly send your :
NAME and SURNAME:
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:
COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE:
ADDRESS OF CURRENT RESIDENCE:
ANY PROOF TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE A TEACHER;
If we dont see any proof ,we will not consider your email.
All these information should be sent to my secretary,through his email:
NAME: Martins Amaechi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
which clearly looks like the usual 419 scam nonsense.

Also look at the La luna advertisement number above : 2676, they're all numbered on ESL Employment and 2 ads before it there was ad 2674.

http://www.eslemployment.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/2674.html#

To me it looks blatantly obvious that someone just copy pasted that ad to make the La Luna ad, drastically improving the terms and conditions and removing inconvenient requirements to have an EU passport, driving license and TEFL cert to make it more attractive to potential victims.

This is the legit ad:

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A NATIVE ENGLISH TEACHER STARTING WORKING AT THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER 2007.
Canterbury School is a private language centre based in Schio, a town in the North East of Italy. We are looking for a motivated, confident, enthusiastic, and lively English native teacher to teach one to one classes and groups at all ages and all levels. Celta/Tefl/Tesol Certificate is required. Teachers need to have a valid EU passport and a valid driving licence.
Our school is wonderfully located. It is very close to cities like Vicenza, Verona and above all Venice. So, if you like teaching English as a second language, but you also love art, history, culture, and beauty, thats the perfect place for you because all these cities and many other fascinating sites are easily accessible and can be reached within one hour. If you love nature and sports, our charming mountains are near at hand and if you are fond of water there you have the Adriatic sea and Garda lake!
We offer full time legal contract to the end of June 2008 with a guaranteed minimum weekly workload. Teachers are paid 10 net per hour (which is 18 with VAT), so the salary is usually between 1000 and 1200 . Health insurance and retirement found is paid by us. The amount is enough to live comfortably in Italy, to pay the accomodation bills, to travel as you wish, to enjoy the Italian way of life. We provide the teacher with a private accomodation which is near the school; the school pays the rent but the teacher has to pay the bills with his/her salary (they are higher in winter and lower in summer because of heating, on average 150 every 2 months).
The usual workload will be about 25 hours a week and the lessons could be in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening (Monday to Friday and sometimes Saturday mornings). We usually try to concentrate them as much as possible so that when teachers come to school they work for some hours, not for just one lesson.
All teachers have free access to the teachers resource library, computers and free in-house teacher training package (both on-arrival and ongoing).
In our school there is a nice atmosphere and a friendly working environment in a dynamic team. This position could be suitable for a person who wants to try a new exciting experience and who would like to have the opportunity to live the Italian life and culture.
So, if you think you are a responsible, patient, enthusiastic, and creative person who feels like living this new experience in our great country, e-mail your resume and cover letter by 30th November 2007. And be ready to come here the first or second week of December!

I lived and taught around Valencia and then Malaga for 6-7 years and there was no school of this name.

As stated, the terms are too good to be true. International Schools (so named) around Malaga are private junior and/or senior high schools, mainly for expat kids....not language schools.

International House has a branch in MLG, and there are other 'academies' and language schools about, but none of them pay well. Unless you are very lucky with corporate or privates, or don't mind sharing a cheap flat, you will never make much surplus money in Spain. A cheap flat in MLG is 400-600e pm. You may be able to make 1000e salary.

I suggest google this school, but it seems that somebody has already sussed the scam.

Golden rule #1: If it sounds too good to be true, 99.9% of the time it is.

Golden rule #2: Never ever send cash in advance for 'visa processing' or as a 'rent deposit.'

If people bear those two things in mind, they'll be fine.
