This some kinda joke?
ESL in the Green Zone
We are searching for
an adventurous, self-starting, independent person to teach English to Iraqi government servants in a secure environment in the Green Zone in Baghdad.
The Green Zone is probably safer than most urban neighborhoods (mostly because you arent driving around, and are not subject to auto accidents).
Incidents of shelling into the Green Zone are almost non-existent.
Who's kidding who???
Benefits: Room, board and business class round-trip travel provided, hazard insurance. Salary based on experience, minimum of $7,500 per month.
Requirements: Native American English speaker, U.S. citizen, experience in adult education.
Contract length: 6 months.
Living Conditions: Shared trailers (one roommate!!!!); comfortable but small. Each trailer has its own bathroom. Free laundry machines and supplies. Excellent food service 24 hours a day. Recreation and bar on compound.
If you know someone who is ready to reach the next level in ESL
Next stop's paradise folks |

Yes, I think it must be a joke. On the other hand, some people will do anything for a few dollars more! |

Its a real job. Security clearance and US citizenship are necessary, otherwise I would do it. They have a good supply of bacon there and I am desperate for a egg and bacon sandwich with HP sauce.
Base pay $7500 usually there is hazard/hardship allowance of 40% (So you could expect $10500 a month) and a 6 week on 3 week off rotation with a couple of return flights in the contract. You would go insane if you spent 6 months in the IZ without a break. Maybe they are trying to get some cheaper instructors because the current instructors know that everyone in Baghdad is milking the situation for every penny they can get and want to join the party. Its not that bad, better than Saudi and if you stay in the IZ you will be quite safe. I personally really like the ordinary Iraqi people and detest how much money is being wasted and how much is going straight back to America in the pockets of private contractors. |

One person I know that did some work in Iraq with an NGO at the beginning said that this offer was ridiculously low... which suggests that he was making significantly more. I pointed out that TEFL teachers are very low on the pecking scale.
Anybody out there with good ME experience who applies should sharpen their negotiating skills. Other than the shared housing and occasional incoming I expect that it would be a great gig working with serious adult professionals.

Green Zone Follies November 30, 2007
Read about the realities of the Green Zone in Ali's Baba land!

"The Green Zone is shelled on a daily basis and we are pulling troops back to Baghdad from outlying posts that, in one case at least, were in danger of being overrun and exterminated."
(MOD edit)
Happy Xmas, friends! |

You can get eggs, bacon and HP sauce in Hawler if you know where to find them. Is the monkey due for the push? "Its" ????? Probably isn't a teacher anyway. |

I'd love to go for this job as I think it would be really interesting. However, I'm not American. I know someone who was on close protection out there and he's just gone back. Good money and a real life experience.
Glad I wasn't born American though:) |

Mistral,
Where can I buy bacon in Erbil? I know some people who can bring it in from Kirkuk but I haven't seen any in Saffra (USAID compound in Ainkawa). HP sauce is easily available, but I finished my supply of bacon 3 weeks ago. When were you at UKH? Must have been before February during the troubles, otherwise you would have guessed my identity by now.
P.S. Please excuse my grammar. I use a whole different set of rules when writing on forums or text messaging. |

Life insurance is not worth in Baghdad, you need to buy a Terrorism Insurance policy. It looked like an ordinary life insurance policy, but with a one-page rider adding coverage for "the following dangers:
1) Explosions caused by weapons of war (WMD) and car bombs;
2) Assassinations;
3) Terrorist attacks.
It will cost you about $90. And if you die from a shell from Ali Baba, you will get around $3,500, or about what an Iraqi policeman earns in a year.

Of course you will retire in Karkouk with his Excellency Prince Ali Baba in his cave |

Was there coverage of this job at this link? Otherwise what does it have to do with a job in the Green Zone?
It covers military casualties all over Iraq... and if you read it regularly you would know that it has almost never listed a fatality in the Emerald City.

I applied and they didn't appear to mind that I was born a woman......yes, and I'm OK with being born an American. The two other requirements are "a current security clearance" and "a military background". Sadly, I'm very insecure and my background only includes staring at young men in uniforms. I can only dream of sharing a trailer for $7500/month. That's a real wack off my mortgage... I'd go to Bhagdad and it would be an interesting experience, one way or the other. |

I applied for that position. I have the military background (Vietman 69 - 70) and have been a teacher for 23 years with a MSc and overseas ME experience. But, no current security clearance - I had a high level one during Vietnam, but it expired when I was discharged.
So, I was told that I didn't qualify!!!
