Hi,
I want to teach abroad but I need to pay off a a loan, or at least keep up regular repayments throughout the year. Where is the best place to do well financially, besides Korea?

If you have 'only' a bachelors instead of a masters, the middle east is out.
After Korea, I would recommend Taiwan or Japan for saving income. |

Not necessarily...if you have a proper TESOL diploma with your bachelor degree you still have a chance to apply to some Middle East establishments...having said that, some Middle East experience does help get your foot in the door otherwise if you don't have the ME experience you start at or near the base salary. If you have relevent teaching experience in other countries this may also help.
Back in 1996 fresh out of my TESL program, I got my first teaching job at a Technical High (Gov't) School in the UAE with just a bachelor and TESL diploma...although the job was not great, I stuck it out for three years and gained the nessesary ME experience (I didn't save anything in the UAE, but had a lot of fun!!!).
I decided to move on to Saudi Arabia as I was in desperate need to pay off student loans. In my estimate Saudi is the best place to save, if you can hack the oppressive and restrictive environment. I worked my way up the pay scale. I managed to pay off all my student loans once I got my first job in Saudi then moved on to another college in Saudi that paid better. It took three years at the first saudi job to pay off about 35,000 CAD dollars in student loans.
Now my savings are all mine. I am currently working towards a master's on-line while I continue to teach in Saudi. I plan to leave Saudi once I get my masters degree completed in 2009! At least this is the plan....
So...it is doable with limited credentials, but one needs to think long term.
Research and ask questions for possible places with (solid) decent reputations and just apply.
You really won't know until you actually apply.
But as I stated before without ME experience don't expect much more than the base salary; base salary varies according to the institution. Of course your chances will be much better if you DO have a relevent masters degree! |
