|
|
Hello All!!
I'll be arriving in Mexico (cancun) on Feb 12th to begin a Celta in Playa Del Carmen, I've been advised to get a rabies injection that consists of 3 seperate injections each given 1 week at a time. This would cost 113($223 US, ref-Xe.com)!! I've got all the other necessary ones but is rabies really needed??
I'll be travelling to Mexico City also.
Many Thanks

Rabies Recommended for travelers spending a lot of time outdoors, especially in rural areas, involved in activities such as bicycling, camping, hiking, or work. Also, children are considered at higher risk because they tend to play with animals and may not report bites. |
I recommend you take a look at that page. IMHO rabies is not much of a risk if you are not working near feral/wild animals. |

Well I know I'll be laughing at my doctor if he suggests paying 300 for rabies when I go!
Just don't stroke animals in the street.
Can I have 100 for saving you 200?
Please, I really need it! |

once i touched a street dog in puebla. about 20 min later my arm had a rash. it spread up past my elbow and lasted 3 weeks. very unenjoyable, all for showing my love to the downtrodden.
rabies was not an issue though. depending on where you live, you may not even see that many dogs. |

I got the series in Thailand after I got bit by a dog. The series including the tetanus shot and first aid from the local Red Cross, totalled 1900 baht, roughly US$61. I didn't even know that the shots are given as a prevention; and they're shots in the arm, anyway. I wouldn't bother unless/until I got bitten. |

You've already got your answer. But I agree, don't do it unless you think you'll be working with animals? (I know one EFL teacher who's set up a stray dog shelter...)
In the part of Mexico where I live most dog on the street are not actually strays, people just let there dogs wander the streets. The health department vacinates all the dogs every year and it's been more than ten years since they've seen a case of rabies.
Scabies however... |
