CECNE has offered me a placement in Salahlah, and I'd like to hear from people who've either worked for one of the Colleges of Technology or haved lived in that area.

Specifically, I'd like to know the locals' attitudes towards foreigners; the availability of western comforts (hair salons, quality markets, good bookstores); and the types of things teachers can do in their down time after teaching.

More important, are students interested in being in school, and do they require particular cultural sensitivity?

Is Salahlah a nice area to live?

I've followed several threads on Oman, and am somewhat aware of the complaints about Administration and low quality of teaching staff at SOME of the colleges, so how might a teacher with several years' experience who loves her work need to make a few paradigm shifts to enjoy her work in Oman? Smile

Please tell me that you are not planning to teach English. Your English is as low as the students.

OK... It is always good to make that clear on a board full of English teachers who jump on every grammar and spelling mistake. Laughing

Let's stick to the thread and not insult people who mean well.

What is it with the cyber road rage, anyway?

I'd asked if anyone knew about the area, and one person in three weeks' time was kind enough to tell me it was beautiful and that I was welcome.

I asked for a bit of insight, not a publishable treatise.

"... do they require particular cultural sensitivity?" Oman is an Islamic country; decide for yourself.
Omanis are generally very friendly people, although the Dhofaris have a reputation for being a bit wild. Mind you, most people are wild compared to the Omanis.
Hair salons are not exclusively "western comforts". Oman ladies have their hair done just like anyone else.
Like humidity? You'll love Salalah.

If you can get to your pm's later this week, you'll find I sent you my email - hope to hear from you.

New members must have a certain number of posts before they can use the PM feature. This had to be implemented because of spammers.
