I remember several years ago there was a thread about the strangest thing you've seen in Mexico.
Today I saw the strangest thing I've seen in a long time.
Keep in mind I live in a small small city deep in the hinterland.
I've having some work done on my truck so I hailed a taxi this afternoon. When it pulled over the first thing I noticed was the driver had a shaved head--not that big a deal, but not that common, then I saw his long grey goatee and round John Lennonish glasses. As I opened the door I was greated by blaring sitar music. As I settled into the back seat I noticed the guy was dressed head to toe in white manta (coarse cotton).
There was a roseary hanging from the review mirror--though no other religious paraphernalia, which is also strange--and you guessed it, it was made of sandal wood. It some sort of wierd taxi, from some other part of the world.

Its not something I have seen recently, and maybe for others it isnt strange...but I cannot get over how many people put jackets, sweaters and t-shirts on their dogs! Right now, with it being the "cold" time of year, I can understand why some people, because of the breed and what not, would put a jacket on their dog in the earlier morning or late night...but mid-day, when the sun is high, there is no need! And even in the summer, there are dogs running all around with t-shirts on.
I dont know if it is to keep them cleaner (a lot of these dogs are have owners, but they roam freely), to keep bugs off (not sure how that would really work..) or if it is simply a fashion statement! All in all, after a year and a half here, I still find it strange to see! |

For those of you who know DF, in Division del Norte a woman about my age wished me a cheery Buenos Das. Pretty usual in DF among strangers. Maybe she fancied me! (Understandable ). |

Well last year when I was in Ecatepec( my home) I was very sick and my husband walked me to the clinic ajacent to the church a few blocks away. Then, I thought I was so sick I was seeing things, there was a furry scruffy dog running the streets with foam from his mouth and acting strange. All the dogs were barking at it but staying clear of him. Immediately I told him to call animal control because it was clear the dog had rabies. He laughed at me and said that someone would eventually shoot it or kill it in some manner. To me that has been the strangest thing I've seen. |

Re Dixie's post...
Yesterday I had to go to Tlatelolco and I was surprised how many people were out walking their dogs on the leash. In my neighbourhood, people just let their dogs wander the street. A man even scolded me once for walking my dog on the leash ("it's against nature, that's why your dog is so aggressive," he was telling me, as my dog tried to chew an ear off his dog. But I digress.) Anyway, we were walking along and we saw a pair of lovely dogs being walked by a young couple, (the dogs) sweatered as usual, but then! we noticed they were Xoloitzcuintles (the hairless breed. Now these guys have a reason for wearing sweaters). And the big guy was pink! I've never seen a xolo gero before, only the dark brown ones at the Museo Dolores Olmedo: http://Izzybel.deviantart.com/art/Xoloitzcuintle-8194772. |

Some crazy folk in this country dress their dogs up as bumble bees. |

Thus once again demonstrating the Law of Dog: The probability that the topic of any thread on the Mexico board, if not about teaching or immigration, will soon converge to a discussion about dogs is extremely close to certainty. |

It is very soon going to be the all-ferret channel if someone I know has her way. |

That would be me!
I just got the newest four-legged family addition today. She is an adorable sable kit, named "Coyuca". The name is after the small village near Acapulco, as I was to have a lovely day there as a Christmas gift, but sadly, due to illness, was unable to make.
Tequila is all calm, and cool with her, as she spent a lot of time around Oscar, my first lovely ferret. Chela.... she is still running all around the place, looking for Coyuca. Someone she has yet to figure out that she is in her hammock, in her cage, napping.
Oh, the fun that will be had! |

As a newbie to D.F., two things I've noticed:
(1) Young couples leaning up against a wall somewhere in full frontal (albeit clothed) contact, being very amorous. Maybe they can't "get a room" or the standards for public displays of affection are different here.
(2) The guys in the Metro promoting a CD, wearing a backpack/speaker getup. They make an announcement and then walk through the car with the music. blaring Thank God I haven't been hung over during one of these promotions. |
