Hey, Im in need of advice
Ive been offered 2 private teaching jobs 1 in Madrid and the other in Murcia. The hours will be 5-9 Mon to Fri teaching the kids of the family who I will live with.
So I will have the mornings and afternoons free.
I think it will be easier to get a part time job in Madrid but I've never been to either of the cities.
Any views and info appreciated
Thanks guys

Do you like teaching kids? I'd meet them first as that sounds like a lot of tuition. Do you think they'd be motivated in those hours? How old are they? I know I couldn't have sat there with an English tutor for so long when I was a kid. |

For job-security Madrid would be the obvious choice as if that job doesn't work out then there's tons of other work here: also puts you in a better position bargaining wise about conditions etc.
The drawback of Madrid of course is the higher cost of living, but I'd say to be on the safe side, if you know neither city, then go for Madrid.

I haven't been to Murcia since 1972 so it may be a bit different now...ahem
But I don't think it has changed that much. It was a nice enough sort of place as far as I could see, but they didn't have the Prado or the Retiro or Plaza del Sol. Also Madrid Spanish is rather like Mexican Spanish and was the easiest for me to understand while I was in Spain.
I have taught teenagers in Russia for 3 hour classes after their regular school. They were exhausted and slumped in their chair with their eyes rolling. It was an -- how you say? - interesting challenge. |

Murcia is a small city/large town. It is in the centre of Spain's market garden---a lot of fruit and veg is grown thereabouts.
I liked it. The people are friendly. However, it is nothing like Madrid. There is no comparison. It's like comparing Plymouth with London. The social life is 0.01 that of the capital. However, some people prefer the more relaxed pace...and it's way cheaper to rent a flat in Murcia.
