Shanghai United International School has been advertising for Secondary teachers, and is offering up to 26,000 rmb. Apparently teachers must find and pay for their own housing. Can anyone comment on the school, its location and reputation, and whether the salary is adequate given the cost of living, transportation, etc.?

Thanks,

Here's a useful discussion from a few years back:

Signing up to the forum and getting an update might be worthwhile.

It seems there are 3 campuses.[campi?], so it's difficult to make any comments re housing and transport. However, there are plenty of people earning far less than 26K leading the good life in Shanghai. You can easily get a good apartment for 3,000, provided you avoid upmarket areas. So with 10K spebding money a month, you'll save half your salary, not to mention having a foot in the door of the lucrative International School market.
Bear in mind that any international school will own you pretty well 24/7: being essentially a Chinese outfit with an IB offering, this one maybe even more so.

ps here are some of the students having a chat. Riveting stuff. http://suis.com.cn/lms//mod/forum/discuss.php?d=557

Hello esl,

I really appreciate your comprehensive reply, and in particular your observation concerning the 24/7 nature of such employment.

As I have written elsewhere, I have thought often and seriously of picking huckleberries ... its small profits might suffice - for my greatest skill has been to want but little ...
