Two universities in different provinces request that I undergo a medical examination to renew(extend?) my residence permit. What is more, they want me to pay for it.

I have never payed for my medical examinations, nor do I know of any FTs who have.

New policy? Conspiracy? Lame universities?

First school made me pay - about 100 rmb. After that I never paid for one. Current school paid it, 318 rmb or something close.

What's the contract say? that's what you agreed to.

I have paid for both of my medical examinations. Don't remember the cost of the first, but the second was 400RMB Evil or Very Mad From the FT's I know it seems they all have to pay for their medical examinations as well. If you like the job and they are offering a good package, then just pay yourself, if not then look elsewhere.

Op give me your email address. I will email you a scanned copy of my recent med exam and you can simply cut and paste your name and info over mine...

Why the hell not, its what most of my students do with their term papers...

I would suggest that you politely ask the school to recheck SAFEA rgulations. Tell them that to your knowledge it is the school that is supposed to pay for all visa RP requirements in China.

That is, what you do in your home country (paying for your z-visa) you pay for, and what is done herem they pay for.
Sorry, I'm grading my last writing papers, and I'm not writing too clearly
It may even in the contract that Party A (school) is responsible for all such costs.

This is China, bargain bargain bargain. It's the process. If you don't bargain and stand firm, they will find more things to cut off from giving you.

Again, just tell them, I aprreciate the contract offer, but my understanding according to government regulations, the school should pay for this. Most schools pay for this. Perhaps your school can recheck its policy.

Every contract i have had, almost, I've renegotiatied. The best way, take the contract they send you, rewrite so it please you, send it back to them and ask them if it is acceptable. If you have evidence that other schools offer the same things, makes it even easier

I have never paid for any exam done in country. Three exams in Taiwan, three exams in China and one in Thailand, all paid for by the employer. I have to concur, you need to negotiate.

Politely tell them that as long as you have a valid RPF and FEC, you do not need to submit a medical report to have a new one issued.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe this is a new policy for 2008? All I know is that I didn't need to submit a new medical report in 2006 when I moved to Changchun from Huhehaote (the FAO guy was on top of everything) and neither last July when I moved from Changchun to Dalian. Of course, the FAO guy here was green and didn't know much, so it took some convincing and educating, not to mention challenging him to ask the local SAFEA office, to confirm that I was right.

The regulation is that the school must pay for the medical exam if it is done in China.

Also, the rule is that if you go to a new province then you must repeat the medical exam. If you stay in the province for a new job then you do not need to redo the examination.

Not necessarily true. Again, most Davesters who have experience in changing jobs from one province to another have been able to avoid the dreaded Chinese medical exam by simply showing a valid and non-expired RPF and FEC.

I had two medicals in three years and the university paid both times. They also arranged transportation. In fact the FAO shepherded all of us to the hospital and walked us from one room to the next. I understood that to be SOP.

I've never had to pay for a medical exam in six years in China, my each employer footing each bill. I thought that that was standard. I doubt that it'd cost much, but my impression would be that it wouldn't bode well for how you're treated in the future.

The voice of reason...

Smart advice.

If you like your school...

Then why...

Make waves over nothing?

Thanks to everyone who pointed out the SAFEA regulations.

jeffinflorida, thanks for the offer; however, I could get into so much doo-doo for that.

The Voice Of Reason, thanks for the sage advice.

Definitely yes. The medical is the pre-req for the FEC. If that is current, no need for anything else

BUT

I must also agree with. If my school is doing good by me, and I really think who pays the medical will be a hassle, create waves, I would probably advise pay for it.

Usually though it is just them trying to see what they can get from you. My first school wanted us to pay the cost for the RP!
