To all:
Just wanted to give a heads up to other teachers about a very negative experience I had working for a company that I learned about here. I accepted a conversation school job with Wishborn Global Communications after seeing their ad on Dave's ESL. I was told I would teach local business people conversational English. When I arrived they pushed me into working as an AET in junior high schools, something I wasn't interested in. I also learned, on arrival, that I would be required to work illegally for at least two months, so I had no recourse and no real rights. The other teachers and I were constantly worried that a speeding ticket or passport check at some point might reveal our illegal status and get us deported. Things got worse after that. When our conversation teacher lost a couple students he was subject to suspicion and criticism that never really ended. Some of our salary was lost to large, mysterious deductions, and when I finally told the school I was leaving the owner made vague threats that left me wondering if I would even get of town safely. Avoid this school and be careful with small, mysterious English schools. The most important thing I learned from this is to avoid illegal employment. Many teachers may not know they'll be working illegally, or some may think it is worth the risk. Even if it is a quick, easy way to get work, the threats of abuse and legal repercussions are real.
