I am just curious I am coming to Taiwan in like 2 weeks and before that I was in KOrea for 15 months. Since I been back in the states I have partaked in smoking some pot. I want to know if that with the blood test do they check for drugs or just diseases? Also do you know or have you been in the situation like mine before you went to Taiwan and was everything all good?
I have no intention of corrupting Taiwan I just wanted to have some fun with friends before I leave |

Heh! Well, resisting the temptation to say, stay in the US or Korea, I'd say you may have very well puffed yourself out of a job there, kiddo. But who knows?
Anyhow, from what I've been reading, Taiwan's blood tests currently cover:
1) HIV
2) syphilis
3) dengue fever
4) etc. [who knows?]
But then you've got your chest X-ray, your stool sample for parasites, and *GASP!* a urine test for drugs.

welcome back Dr. Hammer...."how jue boo jein"...
as far as the stool and urine sample, as has been discussed in other threads, this is not guaranteed to happen, as I don't know of anyone who has been subjected to either of these tests, other than girls, who are being tested for pregnancy....
a friend had smoked weed the day before they got to Taiwan, and she had the health check done about 4 days after arriving and no there was no trouble, so take that as you will... |

My wife and I had to get the health check. She got the stool sample, I did not. Neither of us had a urine test. We both had a blood test. I had to pay the nurse 25 yuan "fee" in addition to the regular cost of the test (like, I am sure it was an unofficial, bribe-like fee and they use it to go buy lunch each day). My wife did not have to pay such a fee.
Then, her school just handed her a work permit without ever even asking for the medical check (another bribe at work somewhere?). I still had to provide the medical check.
Ah... Asia (not just Taiwan).. the land of bent, busted, and abused rules.. |

Are you in Taiwan? I've never heard of this kind of nonsense before, and honestly have a hard time believing it. I own a school here and have helped many new teachers get their work permits. I can believe a school trying to trick teachers on their paperwork, but I have a hard time believing that a hospital would ask for a $25 bribe. Were they mailing the health check to your school? It's common practice here to add the cost of postage.
So if your story is true, you managed to:
- get hired by a dodgy school (common enough)
- get your physical done at a non-approved hospital (harder to do)
- get your paperwork processed by a corrupt government official (very rare, contrary to what people might think. This isn't Cambodia.)
The laws have changed drastically over the last 15 years, and the enforcement has increased as well, Stuff like this is not common at all anymore. |

The debate continues. Like dangerous apple I have also seen many changes in my 15 years here.
The rules have changed so many times during this period, in the main for the better.
Fact 11 years ago stool sample for parasite infection was introduced - this was asked for each year thereafter, now I believe it is only asked of "blue collar" workers. There is a different set of procedures for the Blue and white collar forms. There are also different tests for non workers and also for the native Chinese whoa re also asked for medicals in many jobs. The urine tests came in mainly for drugs. Urine tests 15 years ago and continuing to at least 3 years ago tested for drugs, especially PCB. Having talked to my private students all doctors and the chief administrator of Taoyuen Geneeral who went through the papers translating them to explain what was tested for, blood and Urine tests were mainly for AIDS, Hepatitus AND drugs several types looked for.
Now I know that 3 to 4 years ago things changed, stools were no longer required for "White" collar, but I havnt checked on what the tests are in the blood and urine samples - which still had to be given.
That was my last check up so as I have said before I am out of date, but I would suggest talking to the doctors about what the blood/urine tests are for next time you go for a medical. The women for pregnacy only is new to me.
Rules and procedures change year to year, what they check for is a mystery at times.
On the question of money, bribes? come on. The forms have a tick box and the costs are calculated on what tests you have done, mail if required is optional and not on the form for which you must pay for the stamp, envelope and processing. a 25 dollar bribe? dont make me laugh. |

25 yuan?!?! I figured out the problem, you're having your health check done in China. Problem solved! |

Come on, you guys! Don't be so hard on Pest2. In principle, he's right, you know?
For years, I have been telling everyone that these guys are in charge of all Taiwanese office procedures but nobody believes me.
In other words, it's not so much a bribe but oftentimes, there's just no rhyme or reason as to the hows and whys vis-a-vis the ROC government. Honest Injun! It all depends on who's handling your paperwork at any given moment.

I think I may have mentioned this in another thread, but I met an Aussie gal who had just come to Taiwan, took the medical exam and was promptly deported because she tested positive for marijuana.
Sorry to ask, but why would you be so stupid as to smoke up right before going to a country where you know that your medical test results determine whether you stay or go? I'm not trying to pick on you, but it seems like a no-brainer to me. |
