Ever wanted to see a tourist site in Beijing and find that it is closed because of Olympic renovations . This happened to me last year all the time. I eventually found some ways around this problem. Here are my suggestions below. Please feel free to add some more..
TEN RULES FOR VISITING HISTORIC SITES UNDER RECONSTRUCTION IN BEIJING
1. Visit the more accessible sites between the hours of 8 to 11 AM and 2 to 6 PM. Visit the 'less accessible' sites between 11AM to 2PM, when there's 'less activity' (lunch and siesta tme).
2. Remember that "Danger" and "Under Reconstruction" signs can be open to interpretation and could be just somebody's 'opinion'
3. Wear good shoes and secure camera safely.
4. If you scramble around the outside of the site, you will eventually come a cross an entrance to a less 'closed off' area; usually a hole in the green shade-cloth 'security fence'.
5. Take plenty of water, as the work site can be dusty.
6. Beware of wet paint.
7. Beware of bumping your head on the low metal scaffolding. I prefer the good old days when they used bamboo. It didnt hurt as much.
8. When it is time to leave, you will probably be lost. Don't worry; there will be another exit hole somewhere.
9. Leave quietly. Have consideration for the sleeping workers.
10. If you do get caught, play the 'dumb tourist' card, or better still, pretend to be French.
You may wish to print a copy of this and take it with you.
