Posted: Wed Dec 26, 2007 9:11 am Post subject: The Best Job in EFL . . . I've found it!! |
|
|
I've been working in ESL/EFL since '95 and have worked in such diverse places as Korea and Saudi Arabia from language institutes to universities. However, I always felt a lack of security in these positions. For the last three years, I've been working at DLI in San Antonio, Texas. It's been great!! You want a career? You got it complete with federal retirement benefits. You don't want to work in the states? No, problem. Since I started working there, I've done six-month assignments in Slovakia, Japan and currently, Djibouti. When I decide to return to the US, I just slide right back behind my old desk.
Why am I writing this? Well, I've been a long time reader of this forum and I know about some of the negative situations that are out there. I just want everyone to know that there are professional positions for EFL instructors. You just have to look for them.
Good luck,
PS Check out my blog for pictures of some of my recent travels!!

We do need more optimistic posts like this, thanks! For my part, I can add that I became a freelancer and I am much more happier than I used to be while working in a state school or for language courses. You are right, there are always other possibilities to get a job you like, so there is no need tos tick to the position that makes your life miserable. |

Great. I applied for your job a few years ago and learned it's only for Americans. Just thought I'd add that bit of information. |

I'm not a recruiter but they do hire periodically. They hired about 30 people in 2006 and about 20 this year if I'm not mistaken. Keep checking back with USAjobs and you should see something eventually.
Good luck |

Well, like most federal jobs, the hiring process begins with submitting your resume on the internet and then following additonal steps after waiting for indeterminate periods of time. In my situation, I believe it took about four months from resume submission to reporting for work. Anyway, I don't think being married works in your favor during the hiring process if that's what you were asking. Both people would be hired independently based on their respective credentials.
And, as a previous poster stated, they only hire American citizens. I believe this is the rule of thumb for government employment in all countries.
Hope this helps. |

Those kinds of posts are traditionally harder to obtain for people married to foreign nationals of (as they imagine) hostile countries and living in said countries. |

Sorry, I meant for an American married to a foreigner. Would that work against me? |

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe that it is even legal for them to ask your marital status as part of the hiring process - so I don't think it can even come up as an issue.
Once you are actually hired - then they may ask certain questions for their records and emergency contacts - but by that time you are already hired. |

Oh, as the person said above, I don't believe they even ask you about that, but you can verify that by checking the resume questions on USAjobs. Having said that, you yourself are required to get a 'secret' clearance after being hired. I've heard of only a few people who had problems with this and it was usually because they were dishonest during the application process. |

It jolly well was an issue when they were hiring at my college for embassy work. I never had a chance.
(just wanted to say 'jolly') |

Is it all right to say what DLI stands for? I mean, as an acronym. |

Yes, it's actually DLIELC which stands for Defense Language Institute English Language Center. There's also a DLIFLC in Monterey, California which stands for Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. They train US military in foreign languages and I actually attended this one in the early 80s for one year for the Czech language. Believe it or not, the latter is also hiring English grammar teachers yearly to prep the US students before they begin studying a foreign language. I don't know too much about these positions though since I don't work there. I do know they don't have the same opportunities to travel that we do so that might rule it out for some people. |
