Hi All,

I plan to move to Chiang Mai in April to take a CELTA course then teach English. I'm wondering how much of an impact the CELTA will have on my salary (vs. a course like TEFL Int'l). It seems that a normal teacher's salary in CM is 20K - 25K. Can a CELTA help me earn more, maybe 30K?

A little about my background: I have a bachelor's degree in business from a great California university and 5 years of experience in the corporate world. Unfortunately none of this relates to teaching Confused

Also, I know many of you will want to tell me that I can make more in BKK, but I just don't think the big city is for me.

I appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks,
Nicole

I disagree that it doesn't relate to teaching. I think you will relate well to business English and business students.

CELTA vs other TEFL cert has been covered before and anyway it's a difficult question to answer. Actually I'm not convinced that any TEFL cert really improves your salary but I think it's an excellent thing to do if you want to teach TEFL, both for your sake and that of your students.

I'm not really qualified to comment on salaries for teachers in CM but it's a small place and salaries are market driven.

If you don't like the idea of the big smoky city, there are other places in Thailand too Wink

A CELTA will absolutely make you a better teacher and make the work much more rewarding. However, in CM, it will not have much, if any, impact on your salary. I lived there 3 years so I have a good idea of the terrain. It will most certainly help you find a job and keep you at the head of the list of potential candidates for any position, but CM salaries are market driven and set by what students can afford to pay. The CELTA won't get you more money. You can expect to be paid anything from 250 baht an hour up to about 4-450 baht an hour. Salaries at government schools range from about 25-35,000 baht a month for FT work. Good luck!
