I'm considering a job in Krabi. I'm currently in South Korea and will probably only teach from April to September (they offer semester contracts, which is perfect for me).
I lived in Chumphon (Thailand) for a year, but have never been to Krabi. Hoping people can tell me a bit about living there as opposed to visiting (as it seems like more of a place to visit).
People talk about it being expensive... is it really that dramatic? It's not an island (so they can't drive up the prices for everything), and I'll have a motorbike so I won't have to eat and drink only in the town of Krabi. Is it really more expensive than the rest of Thailand (the non-touristy places)? My salary will be 34,000 a month (plus housing). I lived in Chumphon on maybe ten thousand less and got on fine. I don't necessarily *beep* EVERY night, but I like to get drunk on the weekend and wouldn't mind getting away for a weekend once in a while.
How touristy is it? I hear it's not as bad as Phuket (where I've also never been). I've been to Koh Pan Yan, which I loved. Is it the same kind of atmosphere? Access to natural beauty as well as crazy raves? What's the general vibe like?? Ideally I'd have access to beauty and seclusion and a decent night life when I'm in the mood.
How does it compare to the east coast? How are the beaches? How crowded is it? Is it as exposed as a place like Phuket or Koh Pan Yan? If I live there will I ever have the beach to myself? Is the weather the same as the east coast?
I'll be in Aoluk. Anyone know about it? How close is it to all the things that make people love Krabi so much? Are they bullshitting me by advertising the job is in 'Krabi'?
Oh, and I'm also considering a job in Uttaradit... anyone have anything to share about that place? If it matters, the job and boss both sound great.
Any thoughts are very much appreciated. |

The beaches are beautiful, but it is crowded during the high season. Good luck finding a beach to yourself at any time of year. That said, IMO it's definitely less "exposed" than Phuket.

Ao Luk is about 45 minutes outside of krabi town. |
