| I wish to put in a plug for Abdul Majali in Oman. Since my first contact with him, I have been treated with the utmost respect and efficiency. He keeps in close contact with his staff, which I found not to be the case with agencies elsewhere in Asia. I am being paid at a salary commensurate with my educational qualifications and my experience. Thanks! |

Hey, Hey, HEY!!
This guy recruited me over 2 years ago. I am still here, am involved in a lot of what goes on in my college.
Gainsayers note: There are more pros than cons when it comes to Mr Majali's (AKA Hawthorn's) recruitment process. I am living proof of this!!!
ALSO, take note you people who have deemed yourselves to have been given a "hard time " because the college positioning (in your opinion) by Mr Majali was wrong.
Did you research your destination?
Did you ask pertinent questions as to the suitability of that posting?
Did you ask "What am I expected to do??"
I bet the answer to all this NO. Those who have a problem with such recruiters as the one employed by Hawthorn, have been authors of their own fate.
Gullible? - YES,
Professional - NO WAY!!!!

Recruitment and Selection practice is a subject close to my heart. Prior to my involvement in the wonderful world of EFL I worked in human resource management in various capacities for about 14 years. Back in the early 1980s/'s I organised a series of Recruitment and Selection Training Workshops for a social services department.
I count myself fortunate that in those days I had relatively easy access to Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) training myself. I was able to gain Graduateship of this Institute before gaining full membership some years later, having demonstrated the capability of putting established theory into practice.
Since that time the IPM has merged with the Institute of Training and Development and gained the Charter status that it coveted for so long. It is now known as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (cipd). And, the good news is that its courses are run in Oman by Oakwood International:- http://www.cipd.co.uk/mandq/wheretogetqualified/_centreresults.htm?mode=all¢re=875DOM&IsSrchRes=1
As a Brit, I may be biased: however, I feel obliged to point to the British Council as the EFL employer demonstrating best R&S practice ... Visit http://www.britishcouncil.org/teacherrecruitment-recruitment-policy-competencies.htm for an insight into the BC's approach.

I suspect that this board has been instrumental in the improvement in the performance of the recruiters in Oman. Both Majali and CfBt (and others) (edited to correct...) started off on the wrong foot when the Ministry started using recruiters and were ripped on this board for not taking care of the teachers before they arrived and for their poor vetting of candidates.
Perhaps some of the credit goes to Duffy since things turned around about 2 years ago. But, that is about the time that we finally started having posters on here with something good to say.
So, now I would say that my only beef about recruiters is that I believe that the system holds wages down. The monthly salary was higher 5 or so years ago before they started using recruiters.

Just to be perverse
If anyone wants to apply for a position directly with the Ministry of Higher Education, then log on to:
www.mohe.gov.om/coas
I have been assured that they are in dire need of PHd's and will accept MA's for Design, Communication, Business and IT for next Academic Year.

Does this mean that they only use recruiters for EFL?

CfBT for Salalah, Nizwa and Ibri.

| I was hired directly by University of Nizwa. They are not using recruiters. |

It seems their link for 'User registration form' does not work properly!!
I tried to register using the above link, I got the following message:
" Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator to inform of the time the error occurred and of anything you might have done that may have caused the error."
Anybody got the same error message when trying to register??
Or, may be they do not like 007 to be around in Muscat! |

I believe they're only looking for people qualified to teach English. |

According to their web site, they are looking for people to teach in the following specialisations: Communication Studies, , Design, Information Technology, and International Business Administration.
But still their 'registration online form' does not work!! |
