I would love to work in Syria, but it seems like there's nothing available for non-local hires. Is this right?
Is anyone familiar with the current market there? If I were to just go to Damascus, would it be possible to find work?
(I've read some old posts here about Syria, but I am really looking for current information)

Hi
The only real possibilities, as far as I know, are the following:

American Language Center (ALC)
The British Council
New Horizons

They are all there for the long run and have been around for years.

British Council: Nice building and excellent facilities and location. Pretty good pay but I believe you need to arrange your own accommodation (at least, you did when I left Syria last year)

American Language Centre: Very central. Loads of full and part-time staff. Mostly native speakers. Nice director. They don't fly you in or out. You come on pot luck basis. No accommodation provided. All hourly paid but you can usually get plenty of hours if you arrive for a new term. They have terms and recruit every term. PM me for their contact details.

New Horizons: Relatively new but growing fast. Increasing number of instructors. Nice director. Downtown location. Pay not as good as the 2 places above. Otherwise same deal as ALC

Damascus is a great city and wonderful people. If you don't need to save a lot of money, you'll enjoy your time there. The Oil / Gas EFL training seems to have dried up somewhat but there might be more in a few months or couple of years time if you hang around. Money much better. Having spent nearly 6 years there, I'd consider returning for any long-term oil / gas work.

Hope this helps.
Basil
