Dear All,

I took up a job direct hire with a Saudi University and now after a couple of weeks in Saudi wish to resign. The HR at the university has told me that if i leave without completing my contract they will blacklist me and i will not be able to return to Saudi Arabia for some years.

Is this just a threat or can they really do this?

If so, is there anyway round it?

Cheers,

Sure they can. The Rector of a State Uni in KSA is literally a phone call away from the Royal Court.

What exactly is your beef ? Is it not possible to achieve what you want by talking ?

It's worse than you think. They can blacklist you in the whole GCC.

Well, as far as I know, and according to the Saudi university contract/rules, you can resign before the end of your contract provided you pay 2 months salary to the university. They cannot blacklist you unless you commit a grave misconduct which requires an internal investigation or a court ruling. The university cannot blacklist you because you resigned. The HR is only threatening you so that you change your mind, this is a known tactic in the Magic Kingdom.

May just be a rumour, but if you did not like KFUPM, I cannot imagine you accepting any other KSA job. Not top dollar but good living and working conditions with excellent vacations.

Yes, they seem to enjoy their vacations.

The Rector can pick up the phone and "Shazam!!" I suspect they found out and pulled strings with Raytheon to have you ousted.

No, they would have pulled strings with Interior or something.

Speculation but it is possible that questions were asked on the Min of Int. The LONO may have been abolished but it is still around !

In a three-sided dispute involving two Saudi organisations and a foreigner, who is going to win ?

Perhaps it was you had already gone a bit further than you let on, and had already been issued the visa when you took a job elsewhere. I think you will find that getting a visa and then not using it is looked on dimly by the embassies.

You pissed someone off. He decided to get you. As a local he has access to networks that you cannot even begin to understand

The End.

Idea Have you tried "washing" your passport?
(That means getting a new passport, which has a different passport number.) I would also suggest using a different address, and if possible, applying through a different consulate.

If you spent any time here, you should know that Saudis have problems using modern technology well.Wink

No. I never sent in the visa application. In fact, I called the Saudi consulate in Houston before I signed with Raytheon becaue I was concerned about having signed the KFUPM offer letter. The guy at the consulate told me that my mere signing of the offer letter, and going no further, did not bind me to KFUPM to the extent that I would need a letter of no objection from them or to the extent that they could in any way prevent me from switching to Raytheon. In fact, I seem to remember him saying KFUPM had no such power over me unless I not only got the visa under their sponsorship, but actually deployed to Saudi.

So there is a couple of ways to interpret the offer letter I agreed to.

Paraphrase of offer letter: IF KFUPM offered me a contract (after checking my references), would such-and such a salary be acceptable?

1) Under my interpretation, and that of the Saudi consulate, I agreed on the salary if I later accepted an offer, but I withheld my right to decline the offer completely.

2) Under an interpretation that would give more power over me to KFUPM, I agreed on the salary AND I agreed in advance to any forthcoming offer in the event that KFUPM got good references on me. So all KFUPM would have had to do was notify me that my referecnes were acceptable and the deal would be done. I would have been bound to KFUPM.

If it really was KFUMP that blacklisted me, then obviously the Ministry of Interior used interpretation #2. Or else it was just pure wasta.

it's not blacklisting per se, but if you ever want to return to Saudi for any reason your visa application will be denied. Somehow, Someway they will have a record of you. your name will pop up in the application process. That is why people who have experienced this get a new passport, sometimes even a name change. The HR people are hassling you and once they start throwing that nonsense around its not good. remember you are in their playground and they will play games with you according to their playbook. Sometimes they will have people follow you. It can get weird. If you really like Saudi and want to go back don't burn the bridge and try to correct the problem in an amicable manner. if you could care less then torch the bridge and leave, just don't look back. They know Americans are desperate for work otherwise why would you be in Saudi if you are not a muslim. They are fully aware of how bad the US economy is therefore they now have the advantage. going there for work is putting yourself in a very very weak position as an employee because they see that you need them more than they need you.
