Hello
This is my first post and I am hoping to get some info on teaching and living in Malaysia. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has any insight into life there. I am considering going to Malaysia in the spring...is there efl work available there?
How is the pay?
How are the people?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks |

I spent 6 months in Malaysia. By all accounts a horrible experience. There is a growing disdain for all people not of the Muslim faith there. I was attacked on 2 separate occasions. 1 man with a steel bar (Broke 2 of my teeth) and another group of muslim men (1 black eye) they called me a Infidel, spat and threw things at me. I don't recommend it and it is growing worse. The pay is terrible at between 2200 Ringgit and 2400 ringgit a month (500-600usd). Got out quickly, now in Vietnam abnd very happy for it. If you are a woman, expect alot of negative, sexually charged attention that is not of the polite variety. Good luck.
P.S. I was in Kuala Lumpur |

WOW! Thank you so much for your response. I will definately be re-thinking my destination. I may have to revert to my original destination of Vietnam.... sounds like you are enjoying it there, and that it is safe, which is most important.
Thanks! |

"feel_linsass" If your user ID reflects the way you behaved in public I am not surprised you had a hard time in Malaysia.
Reading your story I can't help feeling that we are only getting part of the story.
Travellers should be wary - the world is not like Kansas or California. |

Yah, Toto, I guess we're like not in Kansas or something no more. Yah, fer sure man.
I'm with scot47. I also don't think we're getting the full story.
Reconsidering a destination simply because of one brief web account from a person one has never met with unknown reliability? Hmm.... I'd rethink that strategy and do some more homework on Malaysia. |

As usual, I find again that posting here is something I view with disdain. I do it very occasionally because of small minded individuals that feel the need to comment when their breath merely muddies the very sound of their voice. How is my username a reflection of my attitude in society? Must be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Have any of you even been to Kuala Lumpur? Probably not and therefore you are wasting space here. I feel no need to defend my post but do enjoy trolls that come into a thread with absolutely nothing to contribute to it. Go to Malaysia. By all means; but my post stands and you can make your own decisions. |

You feel Lin's Ass ?
If you honestly think that is a neutral user name then you must be pretty low down the Bell Curve which illustrates distribution of measured intelligence.

I'm simply a very discerning individual that isn't going to make an ultimate judgment on a place based on vague details made in a 9 line post; that is quite the opposite of small-minded.
Good day to you. |

Distribution of measured intelligence had absolutely nothing to do with it scot47. People with low levels of intelligence are always striving to label people so they can remain in the comfort zones of their limited intelligence. Thus you inferring my demeanor by the call name I have chosen. I am sorry for your pain, It is difficult to get through life with your disability. I know you need to label other people who are beyond you and your abilty to understand simple things that are not challenging to others. Try with all your might to overcome your petty life and comments and try to function in this world as someone to be admired for overcoming his handicap. Sometimes a good heart and intended goodness towards others will allow people to accept and even like you if you strive for it. Good luck to you. |

Back to the original enquiry !!!!!
My wife and I have been to Malayasia a few times ( most recently in Jan/Feb of this year ) and have found the locals to be friendly and helpful. We have always felt safe there and have never encountered any hostility.Although, having said that, I hear that on the east coast the people are a bit more radical about Islam than in other parts of the country.
As for work, I can't give you much information, except to say that when we wre in K.L. ( earlier this year ) we visited a couple of the local language schools and were offered jobs on the spot.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Cheers |

Well if you can't adjust to life in Malaysia then I feel sorry for you. Some people should never leave Kansas.
I think your inability tells us more about you than about Malaysia. |

What's up with the Kansas thing? In the same way as you've never been in the military (though you seem quite happy & smug for others to think of you as some kind of military expert) I doubt, too, that you've ever to Kansas (or California either). Yet you refer to these, regularly.
I'm surprised -- usually, you can spell the names correctly; good job on the spelling. Other than that=your anti-americanism really wears thin after a while.

Did this possiblility: "feeling sassy" = feel_linsass NEVER cross your mind?
OR:
--Are you spontaneously, naturally & ALWAYS this obtuse, small-minded & mean-spirited?
Or are you only practicing?
My guess you are practicing, for when you grow up! (btw, good luck on that one, growing up, you'll need it).
--Finally, in a way , I'm happy to encounter someone so unleasant at this board. Till now, every Scotsman I've met has been genuinely likeable, funny & smart--& respectful of others (except, maybe, toward the English!).
Thus, it's sort of a relief to see that unpleasantness is truly democratic; it recognizes no national boundaries.

My ! Someone really has rattled your cage ! Having a bad day are you ?
The reference to Kansa is a reference to a certain movie starring Judy Garland.
No I have never been in Kansas. I have never been in California either. And I have not been in the military.
I can still spot asinine coments like the posting here from your fellow-American. |

Perhaps, the "hazing" (medicine?) you so freely administer to others isn't . . .uh, entirely to your liking?
Try this (for a change): Think positive be nice to animals (& other people) & say hi to your mum!
No, that's not a line from "The Wizard of Oz." (btw, It's Kansas & NOT "Kansa."
No problems from this end |

Great...rousing. The other poster is not having a bad day, he just sees what you are and feels a need to put you in your deserved place. It is good when there exists others who can see a complete w*nk when they see one. And I am not American, scot00. Funny how you always seek to label people. Didn't you find it interesting that another poster found a possible alternative meaning to my I.D. name? that is what's called an open and accepting mind. Intelligence originates in such a mind. You are not appreciated around here. Why do you even post? and why post on a thread relating to a country you have never been? But I have long ago learned not to expect a rational answer from a brick so forget I asked. |
