You have to be kidding... US$1200 plus shared housing... and they want a native speaker with experience and CELTA.

Oh... and you have to Muslim in order to get these slave wages... Nice...

VS
(Scot... granted that the English of many Indians and Filipinos is very good, but would they be considered 'native speakers' of English coming from countries where English is NOT the official language?)

There was one advertised here a couple of weeks back which offered a low to average EFL salary but included the following stipulation:

Working hours 48 hours per week from Saturday to Wednesday, from 7.45 AM to 12.00 Noon and from 4.00 PM to 9.00 PM. Thursday from 10 AM to 12:00 Noon (40 teaching hours per week), Thursday evening and Friday are off.

40 TEACHING hours a week??? In Saudi?? This must be the worst EFL job I've seen advertised here for Saudi in terms of workload. I've never been asked to do more than 24; less than that at universities. Does anyone working in Saudi teach anything like this amount of hours?

Only a small minority of English teachers in KSA (or anywhere !) are native speakers.

4500 SR a month will not get you someone with a UK or US passport. Maybe twice that.

A mobile telephone number and a hotmail email! The guy is obviously looking for native speakers or he wouldn't have paid $75 to advertise on Dave's. Annual housing allowance SR4,500. I think we should encourage hundreds of our friends back home to apply just to inconvenience the guy!

There are loads of individuals in Britain who would be happy to come and work in the Heartland of Islam for a salary like this. Whether they will be any good as English teachers is another story.

How long they will stay when they find the reality of life in Qassim as an outsider is yet another !

At least they get a choice! Let's see...share a room and bathroom with a complete stranger or get ONE whole months housing allowance to find a roch infested ROOM of my own!

I am no prophetess, but I see runners all over the place.

Maybe SR4500 is the basic salary not the final salary which includes bonus + years of experience.

According to the official Saudi Salary scale, a Teacher of languges start with SR4500 +355 x Nb of experience years (Max 5!) + 500 (transport allowance + bonus .

So, a teacher with 3 years experience will get at least 4500 + 350x3 + 500 = 6050 SR + Bonus ??? = ???????
And the housing allowancxes is SR17000 /year.

It is better to email/call the contact person and confirm with him about the final salary.

Working hours is not teaching hours!!!
You might be allocated 40 HR working hours, but in fact the number of teaching hours is 18 to 20 hours and the remaining are contact and preparation hours. I do not think any teacher in the magic kingdom is teaching 40 HR /week unless he is an illegal teacher from the land of Waq Waq!

Not for that salary. People might go to Makkah for a couple of thousand more, but Makkah appears to be a very pleasant place to live.

Jeez, 007 didn't they teach you to read at Primary School? It states 48 working hours and 40 teaching hours in the advert.

Didn't bother to read this advert either, did you. The housing allowance they are offering is SR4.500 a year. This is a private language school. Nothing to do with the State salary system.

Poll tax was abolished fifteen years ago. Up-to-date, aren't we?

I did put 'TEACHING' in capital letters so that those who make a habit of replying to posts without reading more than the first line might actually realise what this advert was saying.

Clearly wasn't worth the effort. I'll try to work out a way to make it easier to understand next time. Something like:

40 TEACHING hours

Any clearer now, 007? Can't seem to manage to make it flash or jump up and down, sorry.

What I find really amusing is this section:

Quote:
We are currently looking for a teacher:
Muslim, single, male & female, native speaker of English who is committed, flexible creative, and under the age of 45.

Looks like the post is reserved for hermaphrodites only Laughing

Sorry, just couldn't resist...
