A simple question - is Istanbul a safe place for a westerner to work? I understand from general world news that the eastern regions have political and military/terrorist tensions - but does that apply to the western regions and to Istanbul inparticular?

The short, simple answer is: "Yes". Come on in, the water's fine. Pretty much any area in Turkey is safe. Yes, there are terrorist acts on occasion, but they are few and far between. Turkey is a very big country and the chances of you being injured or killed in a terrorist bombing are slim to none. In fact, crime overall is generally low. If you have lived in an American city such as Baltimore, Detroit, or Los Angeles, Turkey will be a breeze. Later!
