I've been offered a job at VATC by Willy Scanlon. Seems like a pretty low salary since I have 10 yrs. experience and a Masters degree in Education. I would like to live in Vietnam but it is hard to find a suitable salary. Have tried intl schools there but no vacancies. I have heard teachers don't really have a choice when they are working at VATC. Anybody know where else i could apply? Not much on Dave's except ILA which I don't want. I am more interested in corporate or test prep classes like TOEFL/IELTS. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanx

i think its a pretty average salary (given the housing deal thrown in too) for vn, but depends a little bit on which city you end up in. i don't know of too many other schools that would pay significantly more, but i must admit i never taught in hcm..
you could try RMIT who do some kind of uni preparation classes (my understanding is that they are affiliated with an aussie uni- maybe someone else could confirm that?), or the biggest hirers at the moment seem to be Apollo- they're all over and i know they do IELTS prep and such. having said that i don't know that the salary would be too much higher!! whichever language school you try would almost certainly require some kids classes. maybe try some of the other unis who have links overseas?
good luck! |

You can find better than VATC with you MA in Ed.

Wages here have plateaued.

It's very competitive to get jobs at International Schools in VN. Positions are already filled, and many many apply to work at them.

Are you outside of Vietnam now?
It's better for you to come here and then find work. You will have more options because of your Master's in Education and 10 years experience. Especially with corporate and test prepping.
You can get a better salary and better work conditions than VATC. No offense to VATC, but it's one of the lessor school chains.
Some additional questions. We need a little more info.
1. What city are you planning on living/working in? (HCMC, right?)
2. Do you need the money, or are you sending money home to cover any debt?
If earning a decent salary is a concern I now believe Vietnam is not the place to be. I am not complaining. But rents are going up, and food and many other services and things are rising in HCMC and Hanoi. But the wages are peaked out.
Good luck. |

You could try this newer place in HCMC called Uc-Viet. They have a college foundation program. There number is 2647708.
I would assume the salaries are higher than USD1,000.
Also there was a new American Uni. advertising some time ago looking for foundation instructors. I think they are in HCMC to.
One thing that did surprise me here is the lack of reasonably priced apartments. There are very few mid-range places for people on teachers salaries. So different from other parts of Asia. |

How much, exactly, does an apartment run per month in HCMC? High to low figures, please. |

When you first arrive in Vietnam, I suggest that you shack out in a cheap hotel or guest house for a few weeks. You'll have ample chance to meet expat teachers who may need a roommate to share their large rented houses.
If you share a rented house with two other expat teachers, the shared monthly rent and utilities will run anywhere around $200 -$300.
If you rent an apartment on your own, it will cost you more. I'd say +/-$500. |
