I'm planning a move to Istanbul this Aug. and would like some advice on the best language schools to teach for. I'm looking for something part-time (10-15 hrs./week) in the city. I have a TEFL ceritificate, BA/MA in English, US teaching certificates, and several years of experience. What are the best paying, most enjoyable schools for ESL teachers? What benefits are offered to part-timers? I'm not sure which part of the city I'll work in, so I was thinking of waiting until I arrive and bringing my resume to various schools. Would this make me a local hire and thus negate any of the benefits offered to foreign hires?

Any advice would be great!

Hello,
I did PM you but maybe the info wasn't what you needed?
Are you specifically only looking for EFL work? I would personally think applying before you get here is better especially if you want to take advantage of flights being paid for you and accomodation arranged.

There is lots of part time work here either for language schools or by doing private lessons. Often this work in evenings/weekends or split shifts though. You can also look on 'mymerhaba' website in the classifieds section for this type of work. I am sorry I can't make any reccommendations. Hope it works out for you. Very Happy

I didn't get your PM Keitepai. Do you have experience with any of the language schools?

I'm looking for evening/weekend work, so that would suit me well. Flights and accomodation will be taken care of by my husband's employer. Do you have any specific good or bad info. on schools? I've seen ads for English First, Oxford House, Berlitz, English Time and several others.

I'm sorry about the lost PM!! Oh well, I will maybe send it again. I could ask about these schools you mentioned - there is a thread here I think about 'English Time' which was fairly negative.
To be honest I would choose private lessons over any language school if you just want part time, a teacher friend of mine who does this earns 60US$ hourly rate and chooses his own hours after school and on weekends. It is much better pay but you would need to build up a network first to get lessons set up. He does have to go to the students homes but it is definitely a good earner. It is mostly children of Turkish origin and their parents insist on having a native speaker to tutor their children. Ages range from preschool to teenagers sometimes prep for exams etc.
Glad you have your flights etc set up already, that is a bonus.
