I can't understand why anyone would travel to another country without doing a little basic research. Are you by any chance American? Have you thought about investing in a guidebook? Or at least borrowing one from a library? |

I think asking questions on a board where the members originate in China for the most part would count as research.

Perhaps if you're in GZ someplaces may take it, but in general I'd say no. Maybe a GZ poster could clarify. Some places still seem eager to get US$$, particularly foreigner-targeted markets, but they want the new style.

HK dollars pretty much useless in GZ. You might be able to use them in smaller shops in Shenzen and Zhuhai but at a discount. Even the Nansha-HK ferry only accepts payment in RMB. |

Change them before you come...
In Shenzhen you can change them in some shops or use them but other than that you need to change them. |

Many shops, restaurants, and hotels etc. in Shenzhen and Zhuhai accept Hong Kong dollars, though they invariably give any change in RMB. Many such places will not accept larger notes however (the largest HK note is $1,000 whereas on the Mainland it is RMB100), so be sure to only take smaller denominations. |
