Valentine's Day coming up.
This week at my high school I will attempt to teach students how to make a valentine's day card, including the poem structure, 'Roses are red, violets are blue......'
I am wondering if anyone has ever taught their students how to make these poems before, and how did you go about it?
I think restricting it to words that rhyme with blue is too tough, so I am thinking of also saying, 'roses are red, snow is white,' nani nani.
Your thoughts? |

Sounds interesting. Making a rhyming poem for Valentine's Day is difficult even for native speakers. Scale it down a bit: I'd give them 3 out of the 4 lines and let them come up with just the third like so:
Roses are red
Violets are blue
nani nani is/are nani nani (e.g. sugar is sweet)
and so are you
Let them get creative with the 3rd line, have the too-cool-for-school kids try to come up with something crazy (e.g. Mt. Fuji is huge) and a decoration to match. |

Just did the first class for this week.
Went quite well, I thought.
It's just noun + adjective isn't it?
One student even got really creative:
Roses are red
Winter is cool
nani nani nani (can't remember)
You are gentle.
Not sure if cool and gentle is an authentic rhyme, but the student really put an effort in, so of course I let it slide. |
