Hi All,
Last year, I drove from New York State to Queretaro, Mexico, where I lived and taught for 8 months. Gas, and having to maintain double car insurance became very expensive--plus, I really did not enjoy driving in Mexico. However, travelling by car was convenient for me in many ways, including the fact that I brought my two dogs (which I adore) with me.
I would like to retun to Mexico to teach again, perhaps in a different location. I am exploring the possibility of flying down this time, and taking my dogs with me in the passenger cabin of the plane (they are small). The thing is, I am having trouble finding an airline that will allow me to bring more than 1 dog in the cabin.
So far, I've found only that Jetblue will allow you to bring 2 dogs in the cabin, but they seem only to fly to Cancun, so that would, I guess, restrict my job search to the Yucatan--assuming I'd have to rent a car from there and drive to my destination.
So, what I'd like to know is:
1) Have any of you flown to Mexico with more than 1 dog in the cabin? If so, what airline did you use, and where did you go?
2) Does it make sense for me to restrict my job search to Cancun/ Quintana Roo (many of you are saying in posts that ESL teaching options are limited there, and that it's expensive to live there)--or are there other locations within driving distance of Cancun with a reasonable cost of living, and decent TEFL job market?
I really don't want to leave either of my "babies" at home, if I go to Mexico to live. They did really well with me last year, so I hope to pull it off again.
Thanks a million for any advice or suggestions!

Not 100% certain on this, but I would have to say that finding even one airline that would allow you to bring both is lucky. The fact that it flys into Cancun, makes me think of the rich and spoiled who want to bring along their pups.
Normally, I think there are only a certain number of animals allowed in the cabin, plus I believe it is a one person-to-one animal rule. So....youre not likely to do any better. I know its not as nice, but have you looked into flying with them in the cargo area? I have done that several times with Tequila (who is way to big to go under the seat, but who would have no issues sitting in it ) and everything worked out fine.
I also recently travelled with my two dogs from her to Acapulco by bus. It went just fine as well. Again, they were under the bus, but that too could be an option if you end up flying into Cancun and move on. You might also get lucky and be able to have them in the bus with you.
One other option (more expensive) is to buy a second ticket. They might allow you to bring both dogs aboard if you have two seats (even if there is no one who is going to sit in it). You might want to call some airlines and ask them about doing that.
I certainly wouldnt leave them home. One way or another you will find a way to bring them down! You just might have to get a little creative though! Good luck! |

Since you called them babies...
No airline would let you fly alone with two human babies. For safety reasons you need one adult for every child under the age of one (or two for some airlines) even if you buy them a seat. You need to be able to help them into their oxygen mask in case of an emergancy.
There's a decent job (on paper) in Valladolid. I can send you the contact information. I think someone who posted hear last year worked there. Maybe that person will see it and tell us how good the job is off paper. |
