Hi Forum,
I am Indonesian, my husband is Canadian. He is curently working in South Korea as ESL teacher. Because the changing of new Visa law for all Native teacher here in Korea ( Criminal check back home, medical check and Visa should be apply in home country, no more Visa run to Japan, these will cost a lots of money for us ), we were thinking to go to Indonesia after my husband finish his contract.
My question is :
1. Does my husband need to buy a return ticket for the immigration purpose ? Can he use one way ticket ?
2. Should he issue work Visa before entering Indonesia ?
3.We read many adds , EF pay are averages from 6.5 - 7.5 jt /month, really low , but what is the other choice to get job in Indonesia ?
4. Can you share to info, how much is housing allowance + maintanance fee the school usually offer ? We plan to rent house by ourself.
Thank you so much for reading and I am await your kind response.
Rgds

By law everyone should have a return ticket if travelling on a tourist visa so be prepared. However i've only ever been asked to produce one as I had to do 3 trips in 4 months when I first arrived in 2005.
As far as schools go, EF are and probably always will be the lowest paying schools and if your husband has experience in Korea, i'm sure he can do better. |

Happy Holidays to you, your husband and to everyone else!
First of all... it's better to be safe than sorry.... so if he doesn't have a job before you get here then pick up a cheap exit ticket (1 month after) to Singapore when buying your tickets to come here. If he already has found a job prior to coming here and there is at least 6 weeks before he starts, then a Working Visa could be arranged by the school. You would go to the Indonesian Embassy in Japan or one on your way here to get it.
I would recommend he look for a job in a National Plus School which pays at least double what EF pays and could be 3 times as much. Plus you get lots of vacation time and other good benefits including housing and medical. If he has a degree then an International School is possible too, which pays even more....
Good Luck and Happy New Year!

Many SE Asian countries stipulate that a return ticket is necessary, and yet rarely ask to see one.
However, if you feel more comfortable providing proof of onward travel out of Indonesia, fly in on a one-way from South Korea, and buy a one way AirAsia flight from Medan to Penang or KL (very cheap - won't lose out if you don't use it).

I did a quick out and in again visa run last month and got asked to show a return. I didnt have one but I'd thought to get my travel agent to print me off a reservation receipt for one that says if you dont pay within 48 hours you lose the booking. The guy at customs accepted it and went on to say that if I needed to stay for longer than a month he could 'help me' .
Last week I came in through batam, a single boat ticket cost 26 sing dollars and a return 31. so now ive got a return thats open for a year.
Btw. Im back, I said I wouldnt but this place is alright.

Hi all,
That was a good idea, I was thinking the same way too.
I told my husband, that we can buy 1 way ticket for him from South Korea, and we booked the e ticket out to singapore or KL.
I have more questions, in case the immigration people ask him to show his return ticket, do they accept booking confirmation ticket I/o E-Ticket ?
And do we allow to bring in some personal goods, like Camera, PC,keyboard, Guitar . Do the custom will charge him for duties fee ? All these items are used/second.
Considering the job, we have been looking into a better place on some ads ( DAve esl and Jobsdb ), I think it is too early to apply it now, as his contract will be end by June 2008. My husband has MA Degree Transcripts completed "Acquisition of Second Language" and this is a credential well beyond those ESL certification courses. He has taught ESL/Developmental English/writing to all levels of students of all ages in USA, Canada and Indonesia (Sumatera ESL/agricultural instructors). Do you think his credential allow him to teach in International school or Nat Plus school. He does not has a teacher certificate.
Thank you , Hanney

my 2 cents...
My friend from England (who i followed 2 weeks later, lol) applied for a 2 month TOURIST VISA for Indonesia from Penang, Malaysia WITHOUT A EXIT TICKET. He got the visa with no problem. I think he put on the applicaiton something like, "will book exit ticket from either jakarta or medan, depending where I am at that time."
I went ahead and booked a ticket (which i never ended up using) for $40USD from Medan back to Penang, Malaysia....
I also met a girl in Bali from some western nation and she said they started to give her a hard time about it, and she just paid them $20USD on the spot, lol....
If he plans on teaching there, I would get the 2month TOURIST VISA before he arrives, like i did. Also, once you have that one you can get a travel agency to extend it every month for 4 more months as a SOCIAL VISA. It requires a ''sponser'', but they are glad to hire one for you. The extensions cost me $60 a month, and would have cost me an EXTRA $10, but the lady at my homestay was willing to be my sponser for free.
Also, you can ILLEGALLY extend your 1month Visa On Arrival through agents, but it costs about $150 a month, lol... I think they just run your passport up to Jakarta for all the ''immigration stamps.'' LoL |

To put in my two rupiahs worth of comment, a few years ago, I had to do a trip to Singapore for a new visa.
The Jakarta Immigration guy asked me if I had a return ticket to show when I returned, which I didn't, as I was staying on a further 12 months.
He took me into the office to see his boss, and I wondered what the hell was going on. Turns out the boss was most helpful, and strongly recommended a return ticket. Maybe a blitz was being planned. He even suggested a couple of good travel agents in Singapore (friends???), and I got a reasonably priced ticket using Air France.
In a nutshell, it would seem that a return ticket is advisable if you want to avoid hassles.
As a PS, Air France serve great meals and good wine. My next flight back was KLM. Cheese sandwiches anyone? |
