Anyone know of board games that would be easy to copy and use for English? I mean things that I could make myself, have few pieces and are suitable for kids age 7 and 8?

Is this to be played with the whole class, or in smaller groups/partners?

Trivia question games are always great to use in a whole class situation. All you really need is some questions and a whiteboard/chalkboard. Or you could make up a board to go with it.

Boogle is a great game for kids (although likely a little difficult for your age, but doable). It is the game where you have die like pieces in a container...you press the top or shake it to jiggle around the pieces (which have various letters, rather than numbers) and players have to make up as many words as possible using the letters that are face up. Something like that you could simply use dice, write letters on them (or place stickers with letters over numbers), place them in a bag or container and throw them onto the ground/table. Then just follow the same rules.

You could adapt Snakes and Ladders so that places on the board require students to answer questions in order to move, or climb a ladder or avoid going down a snake.

You could also make up Bingo games....using spelling words or other subjects, rather than just letters and numbers. Or, if the kids are struggling with their numbers, use it as is!

Groups of five kids.

I don-t want small pieces. Basically I have to create material my contract ios for three weeks but there are no classes, so I-m doing materials. Thast they will hide in their closets and not give to the next teacher, but that-s a different story.

I often make board games out of animal shapes or letters that we are currently working on. You can make a board game out of any shape. After you have the shape, draw pictures of vocabulary or current vocabulary words in the spaces. You have the option of having the kids identify the pictures or using the words in a sentence.

I once gave the kids a blank shape, it was the letter 'G' and let them create their own board game. That activity actually went really well.

Hiya

I used to play a board game with students.....only had about 10 though...and then would split them up into groups to devise their own games....they were given cardboard, coloured paper, coloured pens and not much else....perhaps a few magazine cuttings.....they mostly came up with

Snakes and Ladders
Consequences
Battleship
Monopoly variations
and a few random ones based on no previous games I'd heard of, but it was always my favourite lesson.
