My fist post so I thought I would jump right in and create a little bit of a buzz so to speak.
The topic that I would like to discuss is the (relevance if any) regarding the importance of race and religion in terms of employment specifically in the KSA and other Muslim nations with the exception of the UAE.
I have been following some of your posts and some say that they want Muslims only but made no mention of race.
Meanwhile others have said that everything else Western is strongly encouraged providing it stops short of religion. Or more specifically anything else but Islam.
This immediately brings to mind a common symbol that is worn in the West interchangedly both as fashion and or religion. I wonder if anyone wore a crucifix and was told to remove it or was it tolerated?
I know a lot of you are going to be tempted to comment specifically on the crucifix but please make an effort to share your thoughts on the post as a whole. |

I worked in SA three years and I don't recall race being a problem as long as you were a native speaker of English and a citizen of an English-speaking country. I've also seen ads that specify Muslims but those are usually special teaching situations in public schools. Military contractors hire regardless of religion and the Saudis almost expect you to be non-Muslim. Of course, if you're Jewish, you would not want to publicize that.
This is important. You do not want to engage in religious discussions or discussions in other sensitive areas with the Saudis even if they initiate it. Just nod your head and get back to the page you were teaching. Some students want information but others will report you to their superiors.
Hope this helps!

Hi Sadebugo!
Thank you for your response. Indeed, I think we can all learn something here and that is regarless where one is teaching tact and diplomacy is a must if one hopes to build a successful career in this or any other field for that matter!
