I have previous work experience in South Korea and have been trying to go back there to teach again, but my previous director has been giving me an unfounded negative reference. So, I'm looking into teaching in other countries.
How do the benefits compare in other countries? Do schools in Europe or Africa or other parts of Asia pay the airfare and for the apartment and compensate high above the average cost of living? Do most schools require CELTA or TOEFL? I don't have either, but could I get a job anywhere else in the world without them?
I'd appreciate any knowledge and advice you can offer on this topic!

Don't expect airfare from 99% of places in Japan.
Expect even fewer to pay your rent.
Cost of living is relative. The major players here will offer slightly higher wages for bigger cities.
For newbies, you will not be expected to have a CELTA or any other sort of TEFL certificate. If this is a long-term venture for you, get one. |

A quick bit of research here on your part will reveal that the (generalised) answer for Europe is no, no and no: in fact you'll be paid less than the average worker. |

For entry level positions, the best opportunities seem to be in North Asia. For higher level, try the Middle East. Being 'blacklisted' in Korea may be the best thing that ever happened to you because a lot of people become comfortable there and never explore the possibilities elsewhere.

I don't think we know the entire story. If your only problem is your boss's reference why don't you not use him as a reference. You can use other references not to mention that I am sure that some schools never check any references. The country side college that I worked at never check references for anyone. |

Can't you use another teacher from the school as a reference? |
