MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake shook southern Mexico on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake gently swayed buildings in Mexico City, and it was felt hundreds of miles to the east along the Gulf coast, according to local radio stations.
The temblor struck at 6:50 a.m. and was centered in the region of Oaxaca, the USGS said. |
I was awake but felt nothing at all. |

Woke me and most of my co-workers up!
No visable damage.
It was long and side-to-side.

If you enlarge the map, you can see it was actually quite far away from Huajuapan. There may be more damage in the istmo. |

In Oaxaca City, it felt more like the swaying kind of earthquake than the shake, rattle, and roll kind. It went on long enough for me to gather both kids and get under the door frame. I think there was an aftershock, too, a little more abrupt.
Brings back memories of the Loma Prieta days in California...

Woke me up on the Oaxaca/Veracruz border. Definitely the strongest thing I've felt since I've lived in Mexico, but my experience with earthquakes is pretty limited. For those who haven't discovered this, you can report what you feel on the USGS website, and I gues the information you provide can be used for research purposes.

That is a really cool feature. There is a little map you can look at which shows the location of everyone who has reported that they felt in and how they rated it.
One thing I noticed is your opinion of mild, moderate, strong, etc. is related to what other earth quakes you've felt. You know, if you've been in a big one, this one was nothing, or if you've only ever felt little ones, this one was quite big. |

Yes I was in the Loma Prieta too! Of course I was 7 years old.
I was in a Microbus at 6:50 am and so everything of course was normal. Really worse than an earthquake. |

That's definitely true. Being from New England, it was the strongest thing I've ever felt. But it probably wouldn't have been much of anything for someone from a really quake-prone area. My students are saying that they felt it, but they don't seem to think it was much of a big deal. On that USGS website they also ask for observations such as how much furniture / pictures moved. That must help with the subjectivity issue. |
