Hi Friends- I've been away a while teaching classes and shoveling snow up here in the USA Northwoods...but it's time to get back to trying to relocate to Mexico. My wife and I had an opportunity to spend ten days in Jalisco in January, and it really whetted our appetite to come join all of you. I'm still looking for a university professorship, and I've written several letters to universities in Jalisco and also in Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in the last few weeks (our families really want us to try to stay in the north...).
So I'm just checking in, saying hello, and asking you to let me know if you hear of any university openings. As a reminder, I'm an Oral English Communication/Theatre/Creative Writing/American Studies guy, who was lucky enough to be a Senior American Fulbright Scholar to Ukraine a couple of years ago. I'm an OLD guy (59), with a BA, M.Ed., MFA, PhD, and lots of publications. (I only list this crap to help you think about places you might recommend that I try). My wife is a university ESL teacher in the Unviersity of Wisconsin system, too.
I've checked in from time to time to read everybody's advice and to read about the get-togethers that Guy and others have hosted. Hope to make one soon... |

WoW! You are seriously qualified...I hope you realize that you are not likely to make the kind of money that your qualifications can permit. At least not to my (limited!) knowledge. Is there a specific type of position that you are seeking? Everyone I know in the uni system teaches a variety of English classes - some based on the language, some based on lit in the language, and there have to be some out there based on history, science, etc. However, as far as I have ever heard, the highest salary is 20,000 pesos/month. Who pays more, or how to raise that up once youre in the system...I do not know.
The only system that I am familiar with is Tec de Monterry. Even working part time there I know people who have been making the top end (however there are no benefits attached to that). You could also work full-time which includes benefits, and a full work hour day (even though you likely will only be teaching several hours of classes).
What makes life easier for you, and your family, by being in the north? I lived in Torreon (avoid!), and have greatly enjoyed life more here in D.F. Travelling around is just so much easier, and there is so much more to do here.
Regardless of where do you go, you, and your wife certainly will have to try and make it for one of the get togethers....great times are had!
Best of luck!! |
