|
|
Greetings all,
I was hoping you guys could give me some insight and help me with a potential job search. Where/which country would you suggest I go or look into?
Background:
- Bachelors Degree (in English)
- 2 Years teaching exp at a high school in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Future certificate in tefl?
- I don't drink, not much of a partier - do like to eat well
What I'm looking for:
- Saving money is priority and need to put away $500 for bills back home.
- Anywhere with access to a gym/pool for working out etc.
Other than that I'm pretty open. I'm specifically looking for options away from Korea/Japan, although I'm guessing that's probably my best bet as far as money is concerned.
Thanks for your help! |

Most people can save about $1000(US) a month in Taiwan without being frugal(of course, you can blow money, though). I'm not there yet, so I don't know how eating well would affect how much you save. It would also depend upon how you define "eating well". I know that Western food is more expensive. I believe meat is also more expensive, but I think cheaper than Western food.
The only requirement to teach in Taiwan is a Bachelor's Degree.

I can't think of any European location that would allow someone with your quals to save $500 (I assume you mean monthly, not in total ) |

With a BA and two years of experience, your best odds for saving money are in Asia: Korea, Taiwan, or Japan in particular. Any other location will be difficult to save $500/month in. |

The Middle East is where the big money's at, but you usually need more education/experience than you currently have. Other than that location, the best place to earn a decent salary is North Asia. Since you implied you don't need much entertainment, why not give Korea a shot?

What sort of bills back home do you have to pay (e.g., student loans, mortgage, car)? |

I second Sadebugo's advice. I always thought that I was making some big bucks in Japan, and even more big bucks when I moved to the ME. But, and that's a BIG BUT, with the creds and experience that you indicate, you, like me will always be working for the most sophomoric people. To get away from this, I dropped out of my career field...went to Japan...and got my M.Ed. in TESOL from a well-known western university. BEST DECISION AND BEST SPENT BUCKS IN MY LIFE!
I now have a great income and don't work for people who treat suggestions on how to improve things in curriculum as a personal affront. The ME is the place to be, but not with the creds you have or you'll wind up in places like Saudi Arabia. Best to go to Japan, if that your goal, tighten you belt and get that second degree, and get over to the ME before the salad days or over. The golden salad days are over, but there's more than enough gravy to pass around!!!

thanks again for the advice. as far as bills, i have some credit card debt a small student loan and a car payment. it sounds like korea would be the best option as far as saving money. i'm also interested in morocco, turkey and indonesia but not sure i would be able to save enough in those places.
thanks again. |

People aren't really going to be able to give you good financial advice unless you state how much "small" is. What is the total figure for outstanding debt (preferably monthly)? Knowing that, people in various countries will be able to assess how much you could actually have remaining from a paycheck and tell you. |
