Hiya,

I arrived in Mexico in late August this year. I now work at a university, but I was the last to be hired, as it seemed the initial job advertisement went out in June. Semester starts around August/September, so I'd suggest arriving a little earlier than that.

But, since I'm a relative newbie here, I'll throw it to the other more experienced folks. Smile

Good luck!

Lozwich.

Absolutely, if you want a University job, you must come earlier. They hire teachers well ahead of the early or mid August start dates where I live. If you don't make it on time, you could find alternate employment and wait it out - you may have no choice.

Howdy everyone,

I`d like to know if Universities do any hiring for the second semester? If so, when would one need to come and apply?

Thanks,

b-boy

Regarding university EFL jobs, I think a lot depends on location. At the university where I teach, there's very little turn-over. When a position does open up, it's usually very part time -- maybe 9 hours per week, which isn't even close to enough hours to live on -- and it's usually filled by some local before most people are even aware of the opening.

Many universities in Mexico do not have an intact of new students in the second semester. So openings are dependent on one of the teachers leaving. My university has a very open admissions policy--which is good in that it gives students a chance to study university, but bad because it means students who are not prepared for university level calculus and physics (we are an engineering school) end up failing out. So that means that we have fewer students in the second semester. So much so, that unless two or more teachers leave, we don't replace them until September.

Because we have only native speaker teachers, we do have teachers who have to leave for family emergancies in other countries. So ramdom openings do come up, these usually need to be filled on short notice.
