Boy counted out for hits on teacher

Thursday, September 04, 2008

A Secondary Three student who punched his teacher in an eye was ordered into a rehabilitation center by a Tsuen Wan magistrate yesterday. The 16-year-old studied at Ju Ching Chu Secondary School in Kwai Chung.

The attack came on April 22 after a 26-year-old teacher found the boy and several other students not paying attention in class and took them to another classroom for a discussion on discipline.

The boy punched the teacher twice in the right eye when ordered to stand next to him.

He had admitted one count of wounding during a previous hearing, saying the way the teacher spoke had triggered the attack.

In mitigation, the defense said the student was young and could not control his emotions. But the boy understood the seriousness of the offence and wanted to reform himself.

The defense had sought a suspended sentence or probation so the boy could continue his schooling, but magistrate Sham Siu-man said he was shocked by the incident.

Sham said that when he was young he remembered students respected teachers. He wondered what had wrong with the education system nowadays. And he was not convinced the boy would study hard from now on.

An interesting article SF. Although I don't condone this kid's actions, I'm surprised that this sort of thing doesn't occur more frequently in Hong Kong considering the way the students are disciplined by being demeaned and humilitated.
I think if I were a student in this system, I'd want to hit someone too.

Love the little logo thing by the way...... can't quite decide if it's a student being bored to death in a typical HK classroom or a local having a quick nap on public transport.

I have seen some senior form students being yelled at by the "discipline" teacher; I was surprised at the fact that the boys didn't even speak up in their own defense. I expected some response besides staring at the floor.
